In response to A Thorn In Our Side posted by pink101:

If you're simply defining postmodernism as our ERA, then it's a matter of definition.

Postmodernism is regarded by most as a way of THINKING - a way of APPROACHING life, issues, values, theories, etc. In that respect, I think it has its plusses and minuses.

I thought that to be your understanding in the way you approach any discussions regarding the subject. Be that as it may, "most" don't have the slightest idea of what postmodernism is or what it is that is involved in it.
.
Not only is it an era; but, it is the one in which we exist. In this sense, I mean to say that it is like the front end of the wave that is breaking on us just like modernism and the enlightenment were when they held that position. There are plenty of academic works that support the idea that it is an era. There is one I'm reading now that deals with the subject regarding the point you make about "most".
.
There are concepts and ideas in modernity that were unthinkable in prior times. And, that IS the point of postmodernism that it contains concepts and ideas that were not available in prior times; yet, there are inklings of every new wave in those of the past. So, I can compare the apostle Paul's transcendentalist ways to those of the day in which we live. There ARE parallels.
.
Civilization can be thought of as waves breaking on to the shores of the present time.

.
When it comes to postmodern philosophy, there are several of them. But, in and of itself, postmodernism is not a philosophy.
.
There are any number of postmodern philosophies and philosophers.

» pink101 - Another Point

.
Another point of postmodernism has to do with the idea that, due to the failure of the grand narratives that provided drive for society in the past, we have turned to be an events driven society.
.
Pretty much, I think that appears to be true.

In response to Another Point posted by pink101:

I think it's a mistake to reject all of the grand narratives of the past. I don't have a problem with EXAMINING and even RE-examining those narratives, but to jettison them completely as many are apt to do in this post-modern era is a terrible and unnecessary mistake.

» pink101 - The Postmodern Condition

.
What we see is that there is a postmodern condition in which we all exist--like it or not.
.
In the past, civilization has been controlled by this or that idea of how things are and how they work. We have come a long way from the tribalism of our ancient past.
.
All along the way, our ideas have been organized around ideas of families, clans, and tribes. Then, we moved to nations as we came out of the middle ages. But, where are we today?
.
We say we are a democracy; but, we know--very well--that decisions are made at the top levels and handed down through the ranks. Each political party, corporation, labor union, and religious institution has its own leadership where decisions are made that effect you and me. We certainly aren't making the decisions. Recently, G. W. Bush made the statement that HE is the DECIDER.
.
The question we can ask is where do these leaders get the information they require to make their choices that affect us. That information is made up of knowledge and we have--most of us--come to know that knowledge is privileged. That's why we have secrecy in government and our other institutions if I'm not mistaken.
.
You have to know that knowledge is not common to all of us. In fact, it has come to be a common value of our society that there is an institutional right to operate in secret at some level.
.
Society is more like a machine than it is some organic thing. A machine that is programmable.
.
Who makes the decisions about what programming shall be used to rule our day to day existence?
.
This is the postmodern condition in which we exist.
.
The machine is set in motion. Will we ignore it?
.

It is taking place, because not enough people are waking up to the disturbing reality of what is taking place. Not enough people are rising up to stop it. As Edmund Burke once said: "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
