Life has intrinsic value in and of itself, including in the here and now. But the here and now isn't all there is to life. We have our lives here on this earth and then we have our eternal destiny.

The nation is (as Lincoln said) "of the people, by the people, and for the people." The government is one of LAWS, which - very significantly - puts a limit on democratic will. As it should.
