Brian posits, "I don't believe religion should evolve according to circumstances, culture, or human feelings - though I concede that people's beliefs do indeed evolve. What religions SHOULD do is strive to discern God's revelation, which is transcendent and absolute."
.
Your statement seems to contradict itself. How is it feasible that anyone could ever discern anything that is either or both transcendent and absolute?

In response to Should it evolve? posted by Migisi:

The Catholic Church HAS evolved over the years - to its detriment. The Catholic Church's misread of the doctrine of apostolic succession is infamous for this. It's one of the reasons why Jesus' half-brothers are now considered "cousins." Even though early church history directly contradicts the Catholic Church on this. That's just one of many examples.

I believe Christians today should do, as the church did in Acts, and that is to continue steadfastly in the APOSTLES' doctrine.

Read Acts 2:42 and Ephesians 2:19-20 --- Those passages reflect how it SHOULD be today.

In response to Should it evolve? posted by pink101:

For those that reject the virgin birth....Jesus' brothers. But, conventional Christian theology has always held to the virgin birth of Jesus. And the early church accepted that Mary and Joseph had a normal marriage after that - with Mary bearing children, including Jude and James (both of whom were Jesus' half-brothers and later authors of New Testament books).

Happy Easter, Bri.

I'm cooking ham, sweet spuds, pie - all the makings. We're gonna have a fine family feast. I've made wonderful baskets for my grand babies - full of their favorite candy. I'll be chipping in for their dental care later, I'm sure. But what's Easter without those yellow, pink, and purple marshmellow Peeps! ;-)
.
But on topic... just curious... do you have any feminist-types in your congregation?

Depends what you mean by "feminist" again. happy If you're asking me whether there are women in our church who support equal pay for equal work, protection for women from abusive spouses or boyfriends, protection against deadbeat dads, etc., etc., etc., then...yes, we certainly do.

If you mean along the lines of the Presbyterians renaming the Trinity, then we definitely do not.

Oh, and don't think that the women are stifled at our church. They're pretty outspoken. happy

While Baptist women, generally, give strong voice to the importance of men taking the leading role in all social groups starting with the family, they are quite vocal when it comes to men not performing according to biblical standards.
.
This~~almost~~seems to be a contradiction. In actuality, they are just doing what they can to keep men's focus on the goal.
.
As I recall, that is.
.
. happy
.
Special groups~~circles~~are formed within the church structure in which women are allowed to vent their built up sense of dissatisfaction for the "men folk".
.
I don't think the Catholic Church has anything like what takes place in Baptist churches. But, I have seen some Hollywood productions in which RC Nuns get upset with the way things are being run. Wasn't it why Joan of Arc was burned alive at the stake--for being an upity woman?

This is one of those times where Pink demonstrates his grasp of Baptist culture. Migisi, you have commented on the apparent chauvinism in certain Baptist resolutions and/or doctrines concerning women in pastoral ministry and/or in the home. I'm here to tell you, as a lifelong Baptist, that the men can pass all the resolutions they want, the REALITY is that - in most Baptist circles (in the church AND home), the women run the show. happy
