I saw part of a movie about pre-Castro movie on the tube today.

Batista was a terrible tyrant--far worse than Castro.

The problem is that, in any large society, there's a sizable number of people who refuse to accept socialism. What do you do with those people?

By its nature, socialism requires full participation. It doesn't work otherwise. So, what do you do with the hold-outs?

***For the benefit of those reading, I'm not personally endorsing socialism. I am only stating that it works (and it does) for those societies whose members willingly and fully participate. In that kind of a situation, it DOES work -- see Acts 2.

Did you want to open a thread on socialism?
.
I think capitalistic propaganda has confused the issue so much so that people generally think of socialism as some kind of a godless totalitarianism. That is not true.

I've opened the other thread, as you've suggested, but bringing this back to Castro...

I believe that Fidel Castro is/was a brutal, totalitarian dictator. I believe he is worse that Batista, but this doesn't mean I admire Batista. I just wish the Cuban people would've removed Batista and replaced him with someone better. Instead, they got someone worse.

In response to Socialism posted by pink101:

Castro may not have been the best of all worlds; but, he certainly put an end to the murderous regime under which the people had suffered.

That's like saying that Joseph Stalin put an end to the murderous regime of Hitler over the people of Eastern Europe.

In case you don't see the punch line there...A family friend of mine told me once how a survivor of BOTH Hitler's brutality AND Stalin's brutality - she was Polish - said that Stalin was much worse!.Indeed, he was. Statistics bear that out. Stalin killed more people in the Soviet Empire than Hitler ever DREAMED of killing.

Likewise, Batista was a thoroughly corrupt and often vicious dictator. No question about that. I'm not defending him. He was bad news for the people of Cuba.

But, good grief, to say that Castro has been better is mind-blowing. Tens of thousands have been murdered under Castro and hundreds of thousands have been cycled through Cuban concentration camps. In the Batista era (as bad as it was), people were still trying to get INTO Cuba. Now, people die trying to get OUT of Cuba! And it's been that way for a while - all thanks to the horrific legacy of Fidel Castro!

.
The reason we cannot solve these questions has to do with the obfuscation that proliferates the American media.
.
Who are YOU going to believe? After while it all gets to be based on the observer's ideological belief system as in, you're either for me or against me. .
.
Who's side are you on, anyway? Is the question, "Will you stand up and be counted or not?"
