In response to A Person of Influence posted by pink101:

Who am I to come up with any answers about any origins? But, the more I think about it the more I am convinced that the primitive people of the Bible were taken in by the shamans who claimed to ~ know ~ the creator of all that is.

You've made a choice to reject the other explanation or possibility - namely that God REVEALED Himself to the prophets of old (the men you call "shamans"). It's your right to make that choice, but you've provided no compelling reason or evidence why I or anyone else should agree.

It's not so much a choice as it is an honest reaction to absolutist theology.

Nor have you. But, the superstitious will believe you just the same.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Two choices

In response to Choice posted by pink101:
You have two choices...Either the universe and all of life came about by random chance OR by some type of supernatural cause. The latter COULD include pantheism (the universe itself constitutes some kind of cosmic intelligence and agent of causality), polytheism, or theism.

Logic and evidence support the latter (supernatural causation of some kind).

Personally, I don't believe any of us has a choice in the matter. What is, is, and that's it, period.

We can opine all day long.

But, our opinions won't change a hair on our heads.

I actually agree with that, Pink. happy Reality is reality no matter what our opinions are. Whatever happened w/ respect to the origin of the universe happened - and it happened completely independent from our thoughts, opinions, suppositions, etc.

» pink101 - Reality Is Reality

In response to Two choices posted by BrianTubbs:

.
Right, reality is reality. There's no doubt about that regardless of the Habermas point about consensus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%BCrgen...
.
And, this puts our finger on one of the most important points of postmodernism.
.
Where do we get our knowledge of reality? When we are an ideologically driven people, our world view stands on the foundation of the stories that come out of the narratives we give authority to as individual persons.
.
BUT!! And, it's a big one. It is our opinion that makes our narratives true Habermas to the contrary.
.
Here's an example. Most people you run into will agree that government is the problem or that government almost always makes a mess out of everything. Yet, We the People are the government. Government brought us the United States of American against the opposition of an unbridled and state supported economy of exploitation in favor of wealthy investors.
.
The facts of the matter are that our future destiny and success will be found in our government once we are able to knock the tar out of the capitalist marauders that are messing our government up. Capitalism has come to a place where it is protecting enemies of the people.
.
The government IS OUR BABY and we are letting it be kidnapped.
.
Time for us to get our act together.
.

I can't comment authoritatively on Jurgen Habermas. (I personally am a fan of GARY Habermas - different scholar).

But I disagree with your implied argument that it's impossible or too difficult to establish verifiable knowledge in the context of our world views. I think it's very possible to sort through our biases, world views, etc. - and still arrive at the truth. Difficult...yes. But it is possible.

I didn't mean to imply that knowledge is not verifiable--only that a consensus of opinion doesn't establish knowledge as legitimate.
.
The question is more about how we legitimate knowledge than that it exists. Knowledge is about being aware of some thing or other.
