His name's known here now...crikey...even on Wikipedia. I have not cited that link below. It's a truth-in-waiting event and as usual all the little snippets now available may or may not be...wrong.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,3...

Rest unassured...the underlying events aren't likely to be effectively tackled for preventative measures. What were the triggers for early intervention and who missed them or more importantly...who was expected to act on them.

How are sociology professors ever expected to be a referring agent for treatment of students...or for their exclusion from uni. What would be their weapon of choice if firearms were banned.

Who relaxes when their children decide to go to a US uni nowadays? I can't imagine what you're all going through.

He had a history of mental illness. News said this morning that his parents had admitted him a while back to a mental health facility after he became 'unruly' in their home. His girlfriend had dumped him at the end of 2007. A trigger for the trigger?

http://www.suntimes.com/news/24-7/797909...
"But he stopped taking his meds and had been acting "somewhat erratic" in the last two weeks, police said. Sources said the medications may have been anti-depressants.
.
"Kazmierczak left the Champaign apartment he still shared with his ex-girlfriend, and Wednesday night, the 27-year-old stayed at a DeKalb motel, a source said."
.
This guy drove 170 miles (Champaign to DeKalb) -- nearly 3 hours -- the day before Valentine's Day, to stay at a motel??
.
An interesting article on the controversial new law requiring disclosure of mental health patients to the state for gun background checks. It's a privacy vs public safety debate:
Gun laws stronger, but not foolproof
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local...
"Congress passed a law in December that forces states to report mental health information that is placed in a background-check system used nationally for gun permits.
.
"Illinois legislators went further, crafting an ambitious attempt to keep guns out of the hands of people with mental illness.
.
"When the new state law takes effect June 1, health professionals in Illinois will be required to report to the Department of Human Services any patient "whose mental condition is of such a nature that it is manifested by violent, suicidal, threatening or assaultive behavior" - the kind of reporting that previously took place only when a person was admitted to a mental health institution."

Our society is certainly turning more and more violent.

Indeed

What can we expect with this idiot in the White House and his cowboy administration of his brand of Texas justice?

A ridiculous correlation, considering that we've had "cowboy" type Presidents in the past (Teddy Roosevelt anyone?) and yet did NOT have this kind of rampant violence in our schools.

Does anyone else see this as being similar to the suicide bombings in the Middle East?

There are similarities and dissimilarities.

Yet ANOTHER tragedy. Do some research on Lauri Dan, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Red Lake Indian Reservation, and other random mass shootings. They ALL involved psyche drug use - most often the 'forgetting' or 'going off' of them. A patient MUST be closely monitored when starting and stopping these drugs because they CAUSE manic and violent episodes - even in patients not previously known to be violent. It's in the drug literature! Yet, drug companies often claim the shooter's illness caused the violence. If that's so, why did most of these shooters have no prior history of violence before taking the meds? If they were violent, clearly the drugs didn't help that. There's such a strong and consistent link to these meds and mass murders that it just CAN'T be coincidental.
.
There's always clamor to ban guns. A knee jerk reaction, IMO. In the past, guns were available to everyone. No background checks or permits required. MANY households had one or more, and just about every boy owned and learned to shoot a pellet gun and 22 rifle. Despite gun availability, we NEVER heard about anyone bringing guns to school and killing people. But then again, kids weren't being drugged up like they are today.
.
As I see it, the mental health 'industry' should be held accountable. But, as usual, money talks.
.
Off my soap box for now.

heh heh heh
.
Do you know the origin of the idea of being on a soap box?
.
Anyway, the interchange you and Brian are having here is interesting to me.
.
I'm not saying anything one way or the other; but, I have had some experience with acquaintances that have taken mood altering drugs by prescription. I must say that they CAN fly off the handle with some slight provocation. They need to be babied. And, having an M.D. in the family sorta gives me an edge on such information. I think you're knocking on the right doors.
.
But, it certainly seems to me that something else is also going on here. The idea of copy cat behavior added to the question of this Kacmeiriczek's (sp?) girl friend being in the audience during the NIU shootings and him being a star student in sociology creates a puzzling combination. I'll bet the investigators are having a filed day with the girl friend and any other persons who might have been close to him.
.
The investigators found some of his belongings in his DeKalb motel room among which was a lap top computer. I'd sure like to get my hands on that computer and to check out his writing as well as to see any bibliography he might have listed.
.
And, what of his childhood?
.
He looks like some kid who lives down the street in anyone's home town.
.
There has to be a tell tale clue that is bound to turn up.
.

Yup....breakdown of the family, rejection of traditional morality by our society at-large, and a devaluing of human life.
