In response to Political Joke posted by pink101:
.
Maybe Ralph can pursue a prohibition on prescription drug advertising like we have on cigarettes and hard liquor - especially when they target our youth? Nader was the driving force behind laws requiring health hazard warning labels on prescription drugs.
.
Quoting from:
Stop Importing Dangerous Drugs - by Ralph Nader
http://www.nader.org/index.php?/archives...
.
"Nearly 80 percent of active pharmaceutical ingredients are imported from foreign countries.
.
"...So how is the FDA doing under his watch? A troubled agency for decades, politically undermined and deficient in budgets, the FDA is now more burdened and besieged than ever. Its budget last year was $ 2 billion - the price ten years ago of one B-2 bomber. Here are the FDA's own words:
.
"More than 250 different foodborne illnesses are food safety threats. Based on Centers for Disease Control estimates, 76 million Americans become sick, more than 300,000 are hospitalized and 5,000 die each year from foodborne illnesses. Recent outbreaks highlight the need for increased resources to strengthen food safety...."
.
"The FDA's other major responsibility is to "approve safe and effective drugs and medical products in a timely way and ensure that medical products remain safe."
.
"In recent months, there have been many drugs implicated in preventable heart attacks (Vioxx); one thousand lives lost each month (Trasylol); increased risk of heart attacks (Avandia); hundreds of adverse effects, 4 fatalities so far (heparin from a Chinese factory that the FDA did not inspect. It confused its name with another factory.)" (end)
.
It's worth reading.

In response to Drug Ads posted by Migisi:
.
I first began to understand why the tobacco and liquor companies were spending so much money on advertising when it dawned on me how much money our local newspaper here in Kalamazoo was getting for space that promoted cigarettes.
.
The Kalamazoo Gazette (is that Gasette?) was jumping up and down in support of gun control but not giving more than an occasional few inches in its back pages against the dangers of smoking.
.
In essence, the tobacco and liquor companies were buying the media's loyalty to their purposes for big profits.
.
So, why do the pharmaceuticals spend so much money wining and dining the docs and buying space in media publications? Is it to educate the public? On what?
.
It took a long drawn out effort to put an end to tobacco advertising on the tube. How long do you think it's going to take before the drug advertising is brought to an end?
.

I won't hold my breath.
.
Americans have been led by medical professionals and the drug industry to believe that prescription and over-the-counter drugs are completely safe. You know, the same shpeel that the tobacco industry gave for decades.
.
On the rare occasion when I seek health care, I routinely ask doctors "are there any side effects I should watch for?" Their answer, "Oh no. XYZ is safe". Later, I read the warning pamphet stapled to the bag... a LONG list of serious and possibly fatal side effects. Doctors LIE.
.
Yes, Pink... it's all about the almighty dollar.

Aaah...the excitement of the small print in private insurance. The public system over here is that as he has no job to return to..all destroyed...he could apply for unemployment benefit with an exemption to look for any work his disability prevents him doing. Any allowances that God makes would be a direct deduction from the welfare payment.

I've now guessed the cartoon at Pink's link is of Nader! A part of the joke is the amount of running around I do to understand. happy happy

I was reading today that new drugs here now take on average 3 to 6 years before approval which sorta implies scrutiny. I also read that anti-depressant drugs per some UK analysis of a number of research reports...are largely ineffective unless prescribed the most seriously ill. I mostly hear these things here first...then check them out. I recall being was prescribed Vioxx for severe back pain back when the controversy reared its ugly head...so I refused to take it. Actually it was a drug company freebie to the doctor who gave me the 'sample'.
