» pink101 - Consolidating Forces

In response to My Point posted by Migisi:
.
Consolidating forces makes sense if you can accept each other for who it is that each one of you is.
.
Sometimes that's a difficult task; but, when respect is shown for the one with the longest standing position in the group, then, the chances for success are pretty good.
.
It takes a common-sense approach. Not what someone else thinks that means; but, when every one shares the same sense in common with each of the others.
.
And, you can learn the division of labor. It's what rural America was all about.
.
Yup! I agee with you; but, not in your choice of words. Look up the word, radical. It alludes to a return to basics.
.
Are you serious?
.
I hope you keep a journal as you move into this way of life. It seems to me that it will be exciting.
I just saw on the news that a little south of Illinois, there is an inch of ice on everything. The cold arctic blast is moving to the south and a warm and moist front is moving to the north. The southerly winds coming north cannot enter the cold mass and are forced up above where they drop rain into the the freezing temps near the ground. It spells disaster for wherever it strikes. Those people will do well to consolidate their familial forces and resources.
.
Can you imagine--an inch of ice on everything. Most of the utility lines must be on the ground.
.
Terrible.
.sad

I was raised in a big family where everyone pitched in. If it needed doing, it got done.

As long as I can remain queen of the hive - and get a half hour in the bathroom every morning - we'll all get along swimmingly. (wink and happy )

"Radical" is too radical? (wink)

They get ice. We get snow. Another 5 inches forecasted tonight - on top of the 10 we still have. You Michiganders are used to mega-inches. But I sigh -- yearning for warm sunshine and the color green. At this rate, Daffodils won't be seen until June. happy

We only have about six inches or so on the ground.
.
Saturday was the winteryest day of winter so far.
.
I really like those deep winter days where the snow just keeps coming down no matter what and it blows and it is bitter cold.
.
When I was a boy, my grand parents wouldn't let me go out on the lake on days like that without a compass. Just 10 yards or so out away from shore and you can easily be lost. Those kinds of days remind me of the movie, Dr. Zhivago.

In response to Reactionary posted by paper_turtle:
.
To be honest, I was set back by your response to the idea of what it is that makes up the distinctive characteristics of a Conservative.
.
I have stated my contention that the current state of Conservative Republicanism is based on advocacy of personal greed.
.
I think it is easy to see with the skyrocketing national deficit spending that adds enormous debt while, at the same time, the hue and cry is for reduced taxes with claims that it all adds up to being good for the economy.
.
Next, the wars! The claims are that the wars are necessary to make America safe; but, with full knowledge that a war economy has always been good for business and that the business is part and parcel to the military industrial complex. Check out the investment portfolios of Republicans who claim their "core beliefs" of faith are how they make their choices. I think you will see a definite trend toward investments in oil and armaments.
.
.
Now, there is a bill being presented before Congress in which a special G.I. Bill is offered to provide educational benefits to veterans of the present wars. The opposition is all about how much it will cost taxpayers.
.
As though the Republicans really give a hoot about how much anything costs the taxpayers as long as tax cuts can be made permanent and lowered even further still.
.
When our society's economy is based on deficit spending, just who is benefiting from the interest we must pay on those bonds that are floated?
.
.
We can argue over the use of the word, conservative, and claim that it is misused by the greedy; but, I doubt they will describe their position as one based on personal greed. They like to call themselves, Conservative.

You hit the nail on the head. And so did Ike...
.
Quoting from:
Military-Industrial Complex Speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961
http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/d...
.
..."Down the long lane of the history yet to be written America knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.
.
"Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. That table, though scarred by many past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of the battlefield.
.
"Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. Together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose. Because this need is so sharp and apparent I confess that I lay down my official responsibilities in this field with a definite sense of disappointment. As one who has witnessed the horror and the lingering sadness of war -- as one who knows that another war could utterly destroy this civilization which has been so slowly and painfully built over thousands of years -- I wish I could say tonight that a lasting peace is in sight."...
.
I wish I could say it too. As long as men grow rich from war, war will be waged.sad

In response to Profiting from war posted by Migisi:
.
I went to college late in life--in my mid-thirties.
.
I had four children and a wife and needed to earn some income to keep the home fires burning. So, I helped launch the college's student newspaper. It was a newly chartered state college here in Michigan--Saginaw Valley State College. And, the way I helped launch the paper was through the sale of advertising. I earned a commission.
.
One of the ads I sold was a full page to Wickes Corporation which was a locally incorporated international business. The person that authorized the expense at Wickes gave us permission to write the copy--they just wanted to help us launch the effort. The ad was included the quotation from Eisenhower's speech, "Beware the Military Industrial complex.".
.
That almost got the newspaper shut down. Needless to say, Wickes didn't buy any more ads.
.
happy
.
As you can see by the following link, things have changed since the late 1960s.
.
http://www.svsu.edu/svsuhistory/wickes.h...
.
I was also part of the team that named the paper, The Vanguard. The link mispells the name of the paper as The Valley Vanguad.

Well, that was pretty risky and foolish of them. It was ~their~ fault for not writing their own ad copy - and not proof-reading the copy before publication. They blamed the editor, right?
.

.
Guess nobody proof-read this either before it was published. (wink)
.
BTW, I began college in my 30s too... an adult single mother of two little kids.

Wickes had a big investment in the creation of Saginaw Valley State College (Now, Saginaw Valley State University) and I think that is why they let us write the copy. It was the kick off issue. Remember those days were central to the Viet Nam war.

BTW, the person who authorized the ad later worked for me.
.
Quite a story.

So, it should've come as no surprise to them that your kick off issue would have an anti-war, anti-military establishment theme. Ike's speech was subversive?

I remember one day when we all gathered around a couple of speakers from SDS and listened to their talk of democracy.

Can you imagine our government saw them as subversive?
