» pink101 - I'm Thinking

.
I'm thinking the big question IS about the stand that Jesus takes in our existence.
.
According to biblicists, all our questions should be answered through Scripture--one way or the other.
.
If that is so, then it would be nice to find the place in the Bible where it is put out that one of the basics we must exercise in order to be accepted by God is that we must believe that Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit are one entity. Point me to that biblical reference all you biblicists. Where does it say I have to accept Jesus as God? I want to see that passage.
.
Anyone. Hello, anyone out there?
.
happy
.
Don't all rush to give the answers.
.
So, what does Jesus stand for? What was it he was doing that got the leaders of traditional fundamentalist Judaism so upset that they got him executed by the state?
.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - If I use the Bible...

In response to I'm Thinking posted by pink101:

Pink, if I use the Bible to answer your question, you will dismiss it -- EVEN IF I just cite the Bible as a collection of ancient, historical documents.

So, let me break it down for you...

You don't believe the Bible is "Sacred Scripture" in that you don't feel it's the "Word of God," so any attempt by me or anyone else to simply point to the Bible will be dismissed. Okay.

I then fall back to the Bible as simply a collection of HISTORICAL documents. Even if it's not "divinely inspired," it's still a collection of books - written centuries ago. The Gospel accounts of Jesus were written by the end of the first century. They are the oldest and best historical documents on the life of Jesus.

So, looking at those Gospel accounts AND then the letters written by Jesus' followers (those letters "canonized" like Paul's, but also those not canonized such as the letters of Ignatious), we can put together an answer to your questions.

So, what does Jesus stand for?

Jesus identified himself as the "Son of Man" and stood for "the kingdom of God." This is CLEAR in the literature. What do those things mean? Well, if you read the Old Testament, you'll find that Jesus was claiming to be the divine Messiah. Jesus was claiming Deity and that he was the "Way, the Truth, and the Life."

What was it he was doing that got the leaders of traditional fundamentalist Judaism so upset that they got him executed by the state?

See above. The Jewish leaders felt their power threatened (you'll agree with that) and were incensed as Jesus' apparent blasphemy (that's the part you apparently refuse to see).

ANTICIPATING YOUR OBJECTIONS...you're going to argue that (via the limitations and changes in language and/or the distance in history) that we should "liberate" ourselves from the Bible. This results effectively in each person fashioning in his or her own mind who Jesus was and is. It's postmodern relativistic narcissism - and it has no substance, no grounding in any objective referent. And it should therefore be dismissed.

You are completely misunderstanding my position.

My request was very simple. Let me repeat it here:
.

.
Those questions are simple.
.
Think of the questioner as some stranger that has found his way into your church on some Sunday morning. He is curious about Jesus and of what his existence might mean to him.
.
I shouldn't have to go through a doctoral program in biblicism to understand the answer.
.
If I were a practicing Evangelical, I would jump at the opportunity to answer such a question. The answer has to be the essence of Christianity.
.

When a stranger or anyone new to our church asks me who Jesus is and what Jesus means to them, I answer by showing them John 3:16 and then the "Romans Road" (you're familiar with that, I assume).

The plan of salvation is very simple and straightforward. We are sinners, and Jesus came to offer himself as our Savior.

So, you are telling this stranger who has ventured into your church that he must accept John, chapter one, as the biblical answer to where the Bible says he must accept Jesus as God in order to be accepted by God as a Christian? Is that correct?
.
Do I understand you completely or am I confused?

» pink101 - Notwithstanding All Claims

We are discussing the priorities established by the Bible in so far as the issues of Christian beliefs are concerned. This post is in response to a post made by Brian in the other thread..
.
Notwithstanding all claims to the contrary, it is pointed out that the Bible is the source for all claims made by mainstream Evangelicalism.
.
I think Brian has laid down these four points as being basic:
.
1. Jesus is God.
2. Jesus died and rose again to be alive.
3. Persons must confess these two points in order to be saved from their sins.
4. Jesus stood for something called the Kingdom of God.
.
Do I understand correctly that these four points are the top four priorities a person must express in order to be accepted by God?
.
So, the question remains, "What is the Kingdom of God for which Jesus stood?"

In response to Notwithstanding All Claims posted by pink101:

There's the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Man. The Kingdom of Man represents the human race going its own way - doing its own thing. The Kingdom of God represents complete and total allegiance to and worship of Almighty God. With the Kingdom of Man, everything is mankind-centered. With the Kingdom of God, it's God-centered.
