» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - My Discussion Participation

Since the nature of my participation has become an issue of interest and discussion (see the "Mormonism" thread for an example), allow me to say a couple things...

First, please don't be offended if I fade away for a couple days or end up "dropping" a thread or forgetting to respond to a specific point or two.

I am a husband, father, full-time pastor, and now part-time school administrator. (Yup, just took a second job). And I'm also involved in the local community and occasionally take seminary classes. So, I do have a life outside of Suite101.

Second, I'm not angry or offended. I'm too tired tonight to be either. But I don't think it's fair for some here that I'm somehow too biased or whatever. I welcome the full diversity of opinions that are expressed here.

Most of this is not relevant and some of it I should not discuss on these forums.

The problem is your overall attitude. You are coming off as a street preacher, yelling at the top of your lungs. This has been proven not to work, it also causes the people who you are trying to get the message across to to retreat further into your own beliefs.

Secondly, you have said that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is hiding what they believe. Even though the standard practice is to give the information slowly, LDS.org covers nearly all of the basic beliefs.

You were honest to admit biases, I respect that, and I personally am not a big fan of the Baptists, however, what is proposed is instead an exchange of information. There are things of value in the Mormon faith, some things are rather insidious and the worst things, thanks to Stephen R. Covey, have become part of many corporate environments. There should be things of value in Mainstream Christianity. Let's hash them out here.

That is about as far removed from the reality of who I am as you can get. But that is obviously your perception, and thus that's the caricature you have assigned to me. I'm a realist, and know that I have little chance of changing your perspective.

So, I'll simply say - Welcome. Feel free to share whatever ideas, thoughts, perspectives, etc. that you have.

Answered in the other thread. I will stay and observe. I will read what he and you (and whoever else) write, but I am not interested in participating actively if I'm going to caricatured right from the get-go. I don't think anyone here (were they in my position) would consent to that.

How does that work?
.
Let's see. Supposing we all say the same thing?
.
Now, what?

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Befuddled

In response to Stay or Withdraw posted by pink101:

I haven't used the word "befuddled" in a while, so I'm in the mood to use it now. happy I'm honestly befuddled at where you're coming from in a lot of your recent criticisms.

Your recent criticisms of my discussion participation have been very confusing to me. They've not been on-target at all, in terms of reality.

Sometimes, I don't participate in discussions, simply because I lack the time. This is not unreasonable. I can't effectively engage in all the threads that are here. So, I pick and choose. What's wrong with that? This isn't a full-time job or even a part-time job for me, Pink. It's a hobby. I get very, very, very, very little $$$ from my writing here, since it's such a niche topic. But I enjoy it, so it's a labor of love. But, man, your disgruntlement and criticism is challenging that "labor of love" mindset, quite frankly. happy

As for my using a "boulder" instead of a "marble" (an interesting phrase from the other discussion), I don't see myself in that caricature at all. I have strong convictions as a lot of folks here do. And I express those convictions - as a lot of folks here do. I don't engage in name-calling. I'm not abusive. I don't shut down discussion forums and I've not kicked anybody out. (Not even Oliver. He left on his own, even though he pushed every button I have).

So, whatever, man. Let's just move on, I guess.

No problem.
.
I suppose that--when the Old Side Winder and the Son of Thunder left that there was a trend here as you have been seen hereabouts less and less often--something was going down.
.
And, it does seem like since you have admitted something to some sort of an idea that you observe but don't always comment, that maybe you're picking your battles here.
.
I would hate to see this site go down like so many at Suite101.
.
I like the format and wonder why other sites don't use it.
