The family tradition here comes from my mother, who grew up in Georgia. On New Years Day we eat Hoppin' John, which is black-eyed peas with onions, peppers, and bits of ham or bacon. On the side, hot cornbread. The black-eyed peas are supposed to bring properity in the new year.

Maybe THAT's why I'm not "prosperous." I don't like black-eyed peas. ![]()
I like the cornbread part, though. I can do some damage to cornbread.

Now I've heard everything--a Baptist who doesn't like black-eyed peas. LOL
Trade you some corn bread for some fruit cake? ![]()

For the last 25 years, my hubby and I have sponsored a hunting party and banquet at a nearby restaurant. Every year, new friends we've met during the previous year gather with our longtime friends - some traveling many hours to attend. And our longtime friends bring their new friends. It's grown so large that the restaurant owner had to move us into his big banquet room (at no charge). Everybody is required to bring one thing to the event... a good sense of humor. Grumps are not welcome. If you can imagine a room full of ~sober~ comedians, then you know why it's become such a popular New Year's day tradition for so many.
