» Migisi - Credit cards

.
From the blog "avoid Chritmas shopping debt":
"There is NO positive side to credit card use."
.
Sure, there's a positive side. First, you needn't carry pockets full of cash. Second, to reserve a hotel room, rent a car or a moving van, set up a video rental account, get your car towed, etc., many (if not most) businesses ~require~ a credit card number. These days, it's difficult to function without a card.
.
However, having survived 'credit card hell' myself years ago, my advice is:
1. You can use a bank 'debit' card instead, but remember that if you 'overdraw' on your bank account, some banks will allow the overdraft to go through, but they'll charge you really high fees and interest just like a credit card.
2. Choose a credit card that doesn't charge an annual fee.
3. Keep the credit card limit to $1000 max, and reject their automatic "good customer" increase.
4. PAY OFF EVERY DOLLAR you've charged that month - on or before the due date. Despite the rumors... credit card companies HATE when you pay in full and on time - because they can't make money off you via late fees and interest.
.
And that's HO HO HO on them!

» Migisi - Navigation by birds

.
I did my Ornithology degree thesis on the Corvuses (C. brachyrhynchos = crow; C. corax = common raven). Absolutely fascinating birds - SO smart! I'll watch for the program you suggested. Thanks.

Secrets of Ancient Navigation
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/longitude/s...
"The Norsemen had to have other navigational means at their disposal, for in summer the stars effectively do not appear for months on end in the high latitudes. One method they relied on was watching the behavior of birds. A sailor wondering which way land lay could do worse than spying an auk [Migisi: like a penguin, but it flies.] flying past. If the beak of this seabird is full, sea dogs know, it's heading towards its rookery [Migisi: to feed its chicks]; if empty, it's heading out to sea to fill that beak. One of the first Norwegian sailors to hazard the voyage to Iceland was a man known as Raven-Floki for his habit of keeping ravens aboard his vessel. When he thought he was nearing land, Raven-Floki released the ravens, which he had deliberately starved. Often as not, they flew "as the crow flies" directly toward land, which Raven-Floki would reach simply by following their lead."
.
Does Raven-Floki remind you of any biblical character? happy

Ravens

-----------------------------------------------------------
Smith's Bible Dictionary
A raven was sent out by Noah from the ark. (Genesis 8:7) This bird was not allowed as food by the Mosaic law. (Leviticus 11:15) Elijah was cared for by ravens. (1 Kings 17:4,6) They are expressly mentioned as instances of God's protecting love and goodness. (Job 38:41; Luke 12:24) The raven's carnivorous habits, and especially his readiness to attack the eye, are alluded to in (Proverbs 30:17) To the fact of the raven being a common bird in Palestine, and to its habit of flying restlessly about in constant search for food to satisfy its voracious appetite, may perhaps be traced the reason for its being selected by our Lord and the inspired writers as the especial object of God's providing care

...its being selected by our Lord and the inspired writers as the especial object of God's providing care
.
In other cultures, the raven is a trickster god, a jokester and prankster, an omen of death like the owl, a thief. And in some Native American lore, the raven is the Creator himself:
.
In the beginning there was nothing. Only water, darkness and the Raven. He flew through the darkness with a bag hung around his neck. He'd been flying for a long time, and was getting tired. So while he flew, he removed a rock from his bag and threw it into the sea. This rock became the first island. He sat down upon this island to rest. While resting he took other rocks from his sack and threw them into the water. Thus the Raven made the land.
.
Rested, he picked up his bag and continued to fly. Again becoming tired, he landed and sat on a rock. From his bag, he removed the fir, the pine, the spruce, the redwood and all the trees of the world. He also removed the huckleberry bush, the wild strawberry, the grasses, and all of the plants of the world, including the water plants. These things he scattered across the land and water, so that they would grow and spread.
.
Again, the Raven flew through the darkness, and again he became tired and sat on a rock. This time he removed all the animals of the world. The wolf, the eagle, the salmon, the bear, the deer, and all the animals of the land and sea.
.
The Raven looked around him at the world he had made, it was a good world. Everything was peaceful and happy. But before he flew off, he looked into his pouch and saw that there was one thing left. He removed Man from the bag and placed him upon the land.
