Some? Sure. Some shoot their foot and have careless accidents to get out; but, I doubt that it is a major cause.

I was in the military. Drug use was common then; but, certainly not popular. Maybe 2 or 3%. I think Sailors and others that had visited middle eastern ports knew more about drugs than those who were state side. Most Marines were interested in being healthy.

And, only a small percentage had any serious problem with booze; but, the ones that did have a problem had a real problem--they drank whatever they could get their hands on. I think alcohol use may have had something to do with why they were in the military in the first place. They were in front of some judge who told them they either join up or go to prison. But, they were only the very few.

But, when the troops go into battle--that's an entirely different scenario. I guess you have to put yourself in their shoes and think about seeing human body pieces laying around after a bomb blast. I'm sure some of the men who are suspected of war crimes may have been under the influence. That's why I do not believe that troops in battle should be held liable for their actions--maybe the officers that ordered them into danger's way should be held responsible--I don't know. It's a tough call and I tend to give the Maggots every excuse for what they do in the heat of battle. After all, they KNOW they can be dead in the next moment--they see their buddies drop over with that dazed expression on their dead faces. What can we expect? War drives decent people to insanity--they cannot be held liable for their actions. To do so, destroys troop morale. War is HELL!!

Can you imagine being in the heat of a fire fight with your best buddy getting blown away right next to you and you have a fully automatic rifle with a fifty round magazine in your hands. Will you take time out to pray for the souls of your enemies or will you pull off that fifty rounds and whatever is in your sights screaming at them as they fall? Who really knows what we would do under such conditions? I know that I don't.
