Many military men I knew were not drug users before they went into the service, but all came home users and boozers.
.
Was it the availability? Peer pressure? Boredom? Escapism? Long hours required to stay awake and alert? All of the above?
.
I think Stephen could comment here. I recall he mentioned he'd had some problems with speed? Stephen??

Stress and Substance Use Among Military Women and Men

The story I hear goes like this:
.
"When we were getting ready to go out on search and destroy missions, [drugs] were passed around so we could get high. That gave us the courage we had to have in order to carry out our duties. Otherwise, we couldn't have done what we had to do."
.
I know WWII troops were given "uppers" to help them get through their duties. The Nazis used benzedrine which gives the user a sense of power over everything else. I have heard that fighter pilots are given drugs to assist them in their duties.

Military looks to drugs for battle readiness
http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0809/p01s0...
.
(quote)
"According to military sources, the use of such drugs (commonly Dexedrine) is part of a cycle that includes the amphetamines to fight fatigue, and then sedatives to induce sleep between missions. Pilots call them "go pills" and "no-go pills." For most Air Force pilots in the Gulf War (and nearly all pilots in some squadrons), this was the pattern as well.
.
"The drugs are legal, and pilots are not required to take them - although their careers may suffer if they refuse.
.
"Amphetamines follow a pattern that goes back at least 40 years to the early days of the Vietnam War - further back if one counts strong military coffee as a stimulant. But they're also part of a new trend that foresees "performance enhancements" designed to produce "iron bodied and iron willed personnel," as outlined in one document of the US Special Operations Command, which oversees the elite special-operations troops that are part of all the military services.
.
"Indeed, the ability to keep fighting for days at a time without normal periods of rest, to perform in ways that may seem almost superhuman (at least well beyond the level of most people in today's armed services), is seen by military officials as the key to success in future conflicts...." (end)
.

Surprise, surprise.
.
Sometimes referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome? And, then they are given prescriptions for narcotics to keep them going?

Have you ever seen someone strung out on speed and sleep deprived? I've dealt with some as a police officer. They're dilusional, often paranoid, aggressive, and can be very violent.
.
Sometimes referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome?
.
Sometimes the PTSD is for real. But guys can also be 'labeled' PTSD to cover up their (government-endorsed) drug habit.
.
And, then they are given prescriptions for narcotics to keep them going?
.
Yeah, they got em hooked good, don't they. The drug companies make billions.
http://www.medicinenet.com/posttraumatic...
"Medications that are usually used to help PTSD sufferers include serotonergic antidepressants (SSRIs) like fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), paroxetine (Paxil), and medicines that help decrease the physical symptoms associated with illness, like clonidine (Catapres), guaneficine (Tenex), and propranolol.... Other less directly effective but nevertheless potentially helpful medications for managing PTSD include mood stabilizers like lamotrigine (Lamictal), tiagabine (Gabitril), divalproex sodium (Depakote), as well as mood stabilizers that are also antipsychotics, like risperidone (Risperdal), olanzapine (Zyprexa), and quetiapine (Seroquel).
.
Many of these drugs are addictive, and can CAUSE manic episodes (including suicides/mass murders), as I mentioned in the 'Locking Church Doors' thread. The drug literature says so. And many are prescribed more than one drug, compounding the problem.

Another article from your link:
.
More Soldiers Leaving Military Because of Drug Use
January 18, 2006
.
"Last year [2005] 10.5 percent of enlisted personnel left the military, an increase from 8.7 percent in 2002 and a trend blamed in part on drug use, the Associated Press reported Jan. 16.... The losses -- including soldiers, sailors and airmen who are discharged before their term of enlistment is up -- have risen among enlisted and officers alike in recent years. Discharges for drug use have risen 40 percent in the Army since 2002, although discharges for alcohol use declined."
... (My bold)
.
Do you think it's possible that these kids are intentionally getting caught so they can be discharged early???

.
Some? Sure. Some shoot their foot and have careless accidents to get out; but, I doubt that it is a major cause.
.
I was in the military. Drug use was common then; but, certainly not popular. Maybe 2 or 3%. I think Sailors and others that had visited middle eastern ports knew more about drugs than those who were state side. Most Marines were interested in being healthy.
.
And, only a small percentage had any serious problem with booze; but, the ones that did have a problem had a real problem--they drank whatever they could get their hands on. I think alcohol use may have had something to do with why they were in the military in the first place. They were in front of some judge who told them they either join up or go to prison. But, they were only the very few.
.
But, when the troops go into battle--that's an entirely different scenario. I guess you have to put yourself in their shoes and think about seeing human body pieces laying around after a bomb blast. I'm sure some of the men who are suspected of war crimes may have been under the influence. That's why I do not believe that troops in battle should be held liable for their actions--maybe the officers that ordered them into danger's way should be held responsible--I don't know. It's a tough call and I tend to give the Maggots every excuse for what they do in the heat of battle. After all, they KNOW they can be dead in the next moment--they see their buddies drop over with that dazed expression on their dead faces. What can we expect? War drives decent people to insanity--they cannot be held liable for their actions. To do so, destroys troop morale. War is HELL!!
.
Can you imagine being in the heat of a fire fight with your best buddy getting blown away right next to you and you have a fully automatic rifle with a fifty round magazine in your hands. Will you take time out to pray for the souls of your enemies or will you pull off that fifty rounds and whatever is in your sights screaming at them as they fall? Who really knows what we would do under such conditions? I know that I don't.
.

You should read the accounts of the slaughter when the Poor Soldiers of Christ took Jerusalem back from the Muslims. They say that the victors waded through ankle deep human blood, hands, feet, arms, legs, torsos, heads, and guts.
