Yes, I agree, BUT there's a cause *behind* that cause, isn't there? Why does one get medicated in the first place? Isn't it because of deep seated feelings of inadequacy, fear, depression, or what-have-you, and don't these feelings point to a profound lack of healthy, loving connection with other human beings?

peace and love,
Paper Turtle

Dawn?

Whoops!

Red faced, I mixed you up with someone else.
.
I don't think the Nazis could have come into power with out the backing of a powerful force.
.
So, I do not see the Nazis as the prime mover in Germany any more than I see the Republican Party as the prime mover in America. There is a power behind all the action; but, it is not a formally organized group. I see that it is a super national group.
.
So, how does that apply to your thread here?
.
I think it behooves the move to create an increase in fear and violence. So, I see what you're addressing here as an example of how this movement is having an affect in our society. Imagine--armed guards standing at the doors of any church. The idea is an oxymoron. Of course, Migisi is right in her act of taking her hat off to the guard in this most recent case of violent outbreak. And, so are you in your position. Therein lies the problem of confusion, doesn't it?
.
Violence begets violence. Our leader is a gun slinging and violent man. He sets the standards.

Without question! But doctors have become SO lazy and inept at discovering and addressing those causes. It's SO much easier and FAR more profitable for them (and other related industries) to hand out prescriptions for psyche drugs.
.
My daughter had postpartem symptoms after her second baby, and was referred to a shrink by her OBGYN. I sat with her in the psychiatrist's office for ONE HOUR and watched EIGHT teenagers come in and leave with prescriptions. The shrink did NOT interview my daughter about her condition, but simply wrote her a script. Her time with the doctor? FIFTEEN MINUTES!
.
(She tore up the script in the parking lot, and we got through her postpartem without any psyche meds. We asked her GYN for birth control pills -- stabilization with hormone therapy. Worked like a charm!)

» Migisi - a spiritual look...

In response to & bouncers, too posted by paper_turtle:

Paper, I really think you might appreciate this article. It's written from a spiritual and Christian perspective.
.
Why so many Americans today are 'mentally ill'
http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTI...
.
Teasers:
.
"We are talking about human beings who have somehow developed a secret inner life dominated by exceedingly dark thoughts and compulsions. Wild mood swings. Horrible, consuming resentment teetering on the edge of violent frenzy. Paranoid delusions fueled by intense emotion. Satanic visitations and inner voices that torment people mercilessly, sometimes for years, commanding them to commit murder or suicide - or both.
.
"Does this really sound to you like a physiological problem in need of drugs? Sound like a disease? A biochemical imbalance in the brain? Neurotransmitter activity that's too sluggish?
.
"Or does it possibly sound like something much more mental-emotional, even spiritual, in origin?
.
"The truth is, if we think we can solve problems like these with pills, we might be just as delusional as the people we're trying to help.
.....
"And then, when they discontinue taking the drugs, they risk serious deterioration of their condition. But isn't that exactly what happens when we just mask symptoms and ignore root causes?
.
"Moreover, why do even the smartest and most educated of our experts today tend reflexively to ignore root causes?
.
"Because root causes have to do with God and our relationship, or lack thereof, with Him.
.
"I guarantee that many people who read that last sentence either glazed over it or were somehow put off by it.
.
"I'll say it again using different words: We need to wake up to the spiritual dimension of life or we will never be able to understand what goes wrong with us, or to genuinely resolve our problems..."

» pink101 - Official Requirements

In response to & bouncers, too posted by Migisi:
.
There are official requirements for doctors to earn educational credits on a regular basis in order for them to renew their licenses to practice.
.
The pharmecuetical companies provide opportunities for doctors to get these credits at no cost and with little effort. Extended educational seminars and workshops are made available to the docs with all expenses paid. And, it is common practice that the drug reps make regular calls on the doctors with additional opportunities to learn where lunch is brought in to the doctor's office for all employees. So, doctors learn how to prescribe the latest drugs to keep their patients well medicated. Doctors receive free samples and literature along with counter displays and back up advertising in magazines and on television to help them carry out their role in American society.
.
No wonder practicing medicine is all about doctors learning how to build the pharmaceutical industry up.

True nuff, Pink. While I was in the psychiatrist's office with my daughter, I looked for reading material to pass the time. ~Everything~ I picked up was published by a drug company and promoted one drug or several. And on every lamp stand, a display filled with pamphlets about depression, OCD, bipolar, chronic pain, personality dysfunction, etc. I guess you're supposed to read the pamphlets and decide which illness you have so you can tell the doctor which pill to prescribe.
.
And we tell our kids 'just say no to drugs'???
.
After hearing the list of 'side effects' warnings on TV commercials - some even say 'may cause'... kidney failure, suicide, and a 'fatal event' - who in their right mind would take these drugs for their acne?

In response to & bouncers, too posted by paper_turtle:

Did Jesus hire bodyguards when he knew his life was in danger?

No, but he did encourage his disciples to carry swords (Luke 22).

Did he use force when he was arrested?

According to the Gospel of John, when he spoke his name, the party that came to arrest him were thrown back to the ground. Otherwise, no.

Did he force anyone to do anything?

No, but he also didn't deny the consequences of people making the wrong choices.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - It's a Balance

Churches need to take steps to provide for the protection of the people who come to worship with them. In some cases, that will require additional measures, which were not needed in years past (but, unfortunately, ARE needed today).

At the same time, churches must convey the love of Christ to those in their surrounding communities. If they wall themselves in or turn themselves into imposing, armed citadels, it's obviously very difficult to do that.

It's a balance.

» GodChsr - my response

I can see what you mean Brian BUT I am not on that side of the fence. I believe the doors should remain unlocked.
There is no reason why a church should mimick the way the Government opperates.
In fact I tend to believe that armed gunmen protecting a church would be more likely to test the will of the crazies out there. I think they'd choose the church with armed guards!
Now I don't know the scenario with that church, for all we know it may have been Ushers, not guards??? either way... A peaceful approach typically gets a peaceful response. In the rare and unusual instance that people are innocently murdered at church we should mourn their loss and respond peacefully with open arms.
I can only protect my family the best that I can but at some point we have to simply trust God when our human means can not see the unseen evil in this world. It is God who created me and it is God who will carry me away regaurdless of the time or place.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Church

I think it's important to note that the church is the people, and not the building.

So, when a church building is locked, that's what is locked - the building. Not the church.

Obviously, locking the building DURING worship time in a way that excludes people from coming in is NOT something I endorse. But locking the building at OTHER times - such as late at night to protect against vandalism, robbery, assault on staff working late, etc. That's another matter. Prudence is justified.
