» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Religious test

In response to Romney posted by pink101:

Let's be clear then, Pink, that YOU are the one applying a "religious test" to candidates. In your case, you want someone whose religious beliefs are a minor or minimal part of his or her life. That's your right, but it should be acknowledged that you are applying your own religious test - in your case, the less religion, the better. Again, that's your right, but it is discrimination against people with strong religious beliefs and convictions.

» pink101 - Religious test

In response to Religious test posted by BrianTubbs:
.
If you read my post you see that I am saying that because there is such a strong religious right movement in the U.S. electorate, it is important that I apply the test as well as anyone else.
.
But, what has brought it to the forefront is people like George W. Bush who has made such a point of supporting religion in American government.
.
And, your last post here makes my point that there is a back lash against the religious movement that has been so strong in American politics.
.
Maybe it started with Pat Robertson and Gerald Falwell?

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Evangelical Activism - Historical Perspective

In response to Religious test posted by pink101:

You mean Jerry Falwell.

If you trace the evangelical presence in American politics HISTORICALLY, what you will find is that evangelicals played an enormous role in American politics throughout the 1800s and into the early 1900s. Their influence receded after the Scopes Trial and the death of William Jennings Bryan, and then came roaring back after the 1960s and 70s - culminating with the activism of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, D.James Kennedy, and the election of Ronald Reagan. That's the historical record.

I understand the historical perspective on American politics and I have no misgivings that religiosity has almost always carried enormous influence on the vote.
.
I'm sure you have learned how Fundamentalism was opposed to FDR. I know this is true; because, I grew up in a Fundamentalist environment. I remember discussions where the statement was made that it was hard to see how a true Christian could ever vote for a Democrat.
.
No one should ever underestimate the influence Romans, chapter 13 has on Christian thinking.
.
Prejudice rules the mind of nearly every Evangelical Christian. It is why we're having such terrible problems in the Middle East.

I was visiting a family a week ago, and the husband asked: "Is there such a thing as a Christian Democrat?"

I said: "Yes, but we try to pray for them every day."

» pink101 - A Rising Tide In America

.
We owe it to ourselves to listen to Obama's victory in South Carolina speech. It may portend the future of American politics. Don't push it aside. It represents a rising tide in America.
.
Here's the speech:

.
This is a man with a fire in his belly.
.
He's not my choice; but, it looks like he is it.
.
I'm sure racists are going to try to take him out.

He will need the best protection from assassination that can be provided.
