In response to Once again... posted by pink101:

I'm not questioning Romney's faith. I'm pointing out that he's been evasive concerning the details of his faith. (But, frankly, I really don't have a problem with that -- politically speaking). I know Romney is a person of faith. I've never questioned or challenged that.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Huckster's forked tongue

In response to Huckster's forked tongue posted by Migisi:

Actually, the 9th commandment is: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

And Huckabee didn't lie or bear false witness. This is yet another example of wilful or unintentional failure to recognize distinctions and context. Huckabee's statements can easily be reconciled as follows....

He does not believe one's particular religion or creed (i.e., Catholicism, Mormonism, Baptist, etc.) should be codified into law or enforced upon the people of America. However, he DOES believe that our Constitution, our government, and our culture should reflect God's overall standards of morality and justice.

Is there a religious (even a Judeo-Christian) tilt to that? Yes. Is that a problem? Only with secular progressives and others out of step with America's Founding Fathers. Huckabee's statements regarding faith and politics are very much in line with those spoken by George Washington.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Romney or McCain

Looks like it will be Romney or McCain for the Republicans in 2008. Huckabee's second place finish in South Carolina will likely end his chances at the nomination. I suspect he will fade, at this point, and will probably be a leading VP option for whoever gets the ultimate nod.

Between Romney and McCain, I vote McCain.

Why do you hold any test on Romney for his religious beliefs one way or the other?

.
There are other ~Americans~ who are not Judeo-Christians. Are they all 'secular progressives'? No. They are conservative and moderate people of different faiths - who just might object to being governed by policies based on evangelical Christian doctrine. Ah, but their rights don't matter because they're not Christian. You always fail to acknowledge that some of the 'Founding Fathers' and authors of the documents we uphold, were Deists, not Christians.
.
Rationalize what the Huckster said all you want. As I read it, he lied to someone.
.
And Huckster's recent 'confederate flag' remark that it should be a state's right - which, in many people's opinion, was simple pandering to the southern whites. Would it be a state's right to fly any flag they wanted? Say, another nation's flag like Israel's or Britain's, or even a Nazi flag? It's an all or nothing issue. We are the UNITED States of America - under ONE flag. The Civil war is OVER, and southerners need to get OVER it.

Pink, in the context of the presidential contest, I do NOT.

But, remember, this is a Protestantism site - and therefore the various views and beliefs surrounding Christianity and those who subscribe to various forms of Christianity are up for discussion.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Deists, Christians, Rights, etc.

In response to Huckster's forked tongue posted by Migisi:

I realize that you have deep hostility toward outspoken Christians in politics, so I have no expectation of persuading you. That's fine. But for the lurkers here...

I am not "rationalizing" Huckabee's statements. I've studied Huckabee's positions, and I'm quite confident that my understanding of his views is correct. He does not want to use government to force people to become Christians or to advance one Christian or non-Christian denomination or organization over others, but...he DOES believe that the Judeo-Christian principles of our heritage are necessary for good government.

As for people's rights not mattering if they're not Christian, that's a hyperbolic accusation on your part. Of course, people's rights matter. All people's rights. But not everyone's views prevail.

Example...Some people believe we should spend more on education than we do on health care. Who decides which is more important? Answer: the people through their elected officials.

So, yes, there are Deists today, but that doesn't guarantee them the right to have their views prevail. They have to compete in the democratic marketplace like everyone else.

In the founding era, the Deists lost - contrary to the revisionist history we so often hear (including at this site).

.
And, I don't know how anyone could ever have a problem with that.
.
Even so, the fact remains that you are testing the religious views of those people that are candidates for nomination to run for president this fall.
.
And, so I find myself doing the same thing as I don't want to see some person who builds their political base on religious grounds make it into the White House ever again.
.
So, there IS a de facto test given on the religious beliefs of those persons who run for political office. And, the big problem regarding this test is that other more significant standards are left by the wayside.
.
It's a bad situation.
.

I'm not going to get into a Confederacy-bashing discussion here. I don't believe a state government should fly the Confederate flag from its state capitol building, and I think people should move on with respect to this issue. Give it a couple more generations, and they will.

In response to Romney posted by pink101:

Pink, the fact that Mitt Romney is a Mormon has no bearing whatsoever on whether I will vote for him for President. I am not supporting Romney (at this time), because he's flip-flopped on so many issues - and has refused to take clear stands on others.

If he gets the Republican nomination, I will almost certainly support him. He is far preferable to the Democratic front-runner, Hillary Clinton.
