» pink101 - But, It Is Still Here

In response to Who is Barack Obama? posted by Migisi:
.
For what it's worth, it seems we're too heavily influenced by what the media lays at our feet.
.
In his speech, Obama put his finger on one of the most important aspects of the current "racial" situation in America.
.
Being 76 years old gives me the advantage of personally having seen what can only be called the most stunning change in technology and society that the world has ever experienced. Today's world is unrecognizable as the same one into which I was born. The change is almost traumatic. My grandparents would not believe it. And, this is putting it mildly.
.
And, I have seen the change from rabid racism and sexism to what we have today that has come to be some sort of an eye winking thing. The racism of our day is highly generational and very different at every age level; but, it is still here. It disguises itself in any number of ways depending on who is expressing it; but, it is still here.
.
I think what Obama pointed out was that he belongs to the special group of persons in his generation that are ready to go to work on getting over it. He showed his empathy for the older generation in maintaining his loyalty to his church pastor and he own grandmother while ~~ at the same time ~~ he decried the fact that they are wrong in the way they hold on to their old fears and anger. But, again ~~ at the same time ~~ he shows us that his talk about change is more real than just the changing of the guard next January when we finally get over this long nightmare with George W. Bush.
.
Much work needs to be done if we are to unify our nation not the least of which is to bring the generations together in unity. We need to see where our interests are conjoined and how we truly are in life together with the same interests.
.
I suspect he is going to work on this in his upcoming speeches and I believe he will take the country by storm on election day. Unless the enemies of democracy are able to discredit him in the media. They ARE trying.
.
I am an older white male and I am 100% for Obama. There are a lot of other white males that support Obama. We need the change.
.
If we are unable to bring this terrible chapter of American history to an end now, when will we ever do it? The Religionists are dead set against progress in their consarned search for truth in the past.
.

I read his speech. He didn't dodge. He said it as he sees it. One thing which struck me was his acknowledgment that Rev. Wright is stuck in the past --- as if no change has occurred in his lifetime. I think too many - of ALL colors and creeds - are also stuck in the past, and don't WANT change. Rather than hail the positive progress that's been made and actively work towards more productive change, they'd rather sit on their duffs (or stand at the pulpit) and whine and blame everyone else for their social and economic problems - some which are their own doing. Wright, Farrakhan, and ALL racist separatists like them, undermine whatever progress has been and must be made.

Yet, what Obama is saying is that the younger generation cannot just throw the older generation out with the bath water.
.
And, it is in that idea where Obama is focused on bringing people together. I think his speech was a stroke of genius.
.
And, I will watch to see if any other candidate is able to grasp it.

.
Remember Watergate when Nixon people got caught spying on the Democratic Party Headquarters in the Watergate complex?
.
There has just been a news release that some insider spying has been going on with Obama's passport files.
.
Will this story have legs?

In response to Obama the Fraud? posted by BrianTubbs:
.
Here's a comment by Frank Schaeffer who is the son of the late Francis Schaeffer:
.
"When Senator Obama's preacher thundered about racism and injustice Obama suffered smear-by-association. But when my late father -- Religious Right leader Francis Schaeffer -- denounced America and even called for the violent overthrow of the US government, he was invited to lunch with presidents Ford, Reagan and Bush, Sr.
.
"Every Sunday thousands of right wing white preachers (following in my father's footsteps) rail against America's sins from tens of thousands of pulpits. They tell us that America is complicit in the 'murder of the unborn,' has become ;Sodom' by coddling gays, and that our public schools are sinful places full of evolutionists and sex educators hell-bent on corrupting children. They say, as my dad often did, that we are, 'under the judgment of God.' They call America evil and warn of immanent destruction. By comparison Obama's minister's shouted 'controversial' comments were mild. All he said was that God should damn America for our racism and violence and that no one had ever used the N-word about Hillary Clinton."

.
Do you want us to think, Brian, that you never blame the American people for anything from your pulpit and that you have never compared America to Sodom and Gomorrah?
.
You can read more of Frank Schaeffer's comments at this link: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-scha...
.
Beware the tyranny of the masses.

Different Standards for Black and White Preachers
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/cenk-uygur...
Quote:
"But one thing is indisputable -- the enormous disparity in how the media has covered these white preachers as opposed to Rev. Wright. Have you ever even heard of Rod Parsley? As you can see from what I listed above, all of these white preachers have said and done the most outlandish and offensive things you can imagine -- and hardly a peep.
.
"If the disparity in coverage isn't racist, then what is it?"
(end)
.
It's a short article, worth a read.

In response to Tyranny Of The Masses posted by pink101:

I can't speak for Schaeffer, but I've never called for God to damn America, nor have I endorsed the overthrow of its government. On the contrary, I've always expressed my love for America from my pulpit, while acknowledging (of course) that the nation is imperfect. Had Obama's pastor done that - spoke of his love for America, while denouncing its sins - we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Far be it from me to beat a dead horse.
.
You're correct, of course, that we wouldn't be having THIS discussion. But, we would be having another one quite a bit like it.
.
You forget that I have spent quite a bit of time in O-ho-ho and I learned about the pro-dixie attitued that exists there.
.
Now, you come here with your very narrowly aimed statement regarding the fact that you've "never called for God to damn America, nor [that you] endorsed the overthrow of its government]; but, you evade the question which was to ask if you've ever compared present day America with Sodom and Gomorrah. None of us can escape our cultural heritage and that was an important point Obama made in his discussion on the Larry King Show last night. You cannot escape your Virginny upbringing and your Ohioan racism any more than I can escape my upbringing and the culture I have been given.
.
But, Brian ~~ and here is the point ~~ both you and I as well as every other American can reach beyond where we find ourselves into a better future where we don't focus in on ~~ like you are doing here ~~ our differences.
.
What investment does anyone have in the divisive politics of Republicanism, as an American who claims they are reaching out to all people?
.
Perhaps there is some worthy purpose in "rendering unto Caesar"?
.
