Having been the victim of a cooked up press attack without basis myself, I can tell you that it doesn't make any difference if McCain is guilty of any impropriety whatsoever or if he is completely innocent.
.
The American people have been conditioned to believe that if the press says something there has to be some basis to it.
.
My take is that came out of the middle twentieth century when the press was promoted as the spokesperson for honesty.
.
I will tell you here and now that the power of the press is its ability to lie and get away with it and its propensity to do that exactly.
.
And, now, with mega-corporations in charge of the press (Fox for example) you can bet the lies will be more and more audacious. Why shouldn't they? Everyone else lies--it's the mark of the boomer generation isn't it?

From the link: "[Times reporters] say it doesn't really matter whether McCain cheated on his wife. What matters is that there was 'the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist.'"
.
I think that IS the point. And, it cuts McCain deep as one of the issues Obama is running on has to do with special interest lobby groups.

- Media Bias
The media has always been biased - and has always been influenced by monied interests. Always.
The encouraging thing is that the press is expanding and diversifying. People now have multiple choices and options, which is good -- IF they avail themselves of those multiple options.
I regularly check CNN, Fox, Yahoo! News, Christian Post, occasionally BBC News, and occasionally direct from the wire services. And I read blogs and articles from pundits that are conservative, moderate, and liberal. I try to get multiple perspectives.
It's up to the CITIZEN to keep a balanced perspective.

Yes, it is. And, that puts our focus on one of the main problems with democracy. I'm sure you're aware of that.
.
The press is able to get through to the people using its ability to dominate their thinking. It manipulates us. The politicians shirk their responsibilities to work toward helping us understand how easily we are hoodwinked. Why do you think that is true?

- Media Bias
Part of the reason is that we're dealing with BOTH information overload and voter/citizen apathy (unless a controversial issue or interesting scandal breaks - and then voter interest is temporary).
To cut through this, political campaigns (which have become big business) employ marketing techniques used in the corporate world.
We've been reduced to a sound byte, bumper sticker, image-heavy (and substance-light), consumer-oriented culture in EVERY sense of those terms.

Yes, yes, that's what I'm saying; but, why do you think it is true? That's the question.

It's a reporter's livelihood to generate stories to fill the pages and airwaves. The more controversial, the better the viewership and ratings. It's about money, not truth. Foller the dollar.
