» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Public opinion polls

In response to Next Prez & Iraq posted by Migisi:

Migisi, if the war had gone well, the American people would be solidly behind Bush and the Republicans today. And Hillary Clinton would still be pro-war.

How do I know this? Look at the first Iraq war. It was quick and decisive - and widely popular with the American people.

Yes, there were the hard leftists and/or pacifists who oppose just about ALL wars that the US is involved with. They're always around. Heck, there are still some people opposed to our troop presence in Afghanistan. But you don't see Hillary or Obama campaigning against that, do you? Of course not.

US public opinion is against the Iraq war now, BECAUSE the war was mismanaged and botched.

In response to Not Fear posted by BrianTubbs:
.
Pink, you have made a decision (as I knew you would - and so predicted) to oppose Mike Huckabee. Why? Because - in your mind - a vote for Huckabee is a vote for religionism.
.
I'm not opposing Huckabee. In fact, I think I have often shown that I support him as a Republican candidate. You need to stop telling me what I think.
.
I liked Huckabee because I thought he would NOT be a religionist in office and I said so in posts hereabouts.
.
Regarding Iran and the spoils of war? As an historian, would you tell us where the states of Iraq and Kuwait came from?
.
I don't know how many Iraqis have died in our OPERATION IRAQ LIBERATION; but, I doubt that any thing close to the number we've killed will be killed when the Iraqis take control of their own society--like it or not. I wonder if they'll have a hanging party like we hosted when we killed Saddam Hussein.

Look at the first Iraq war. It was quick and decisive - and widely popular with the American people.
.
Well, not exactly the 'first' Iraq war, but I know which you mean. The "Gulf War" was an entirely different scenerio, Brian. Iraq invaded Kuwait. There was no question that IRAQ was the agressor! Most in the UN supported sanctions and a military response. In '91, Congress authorized military force to drive Iraq out of Kuwait. But it was hardly a unanimous decision. The Senate voted 52-47, and the House 250-183 House -- the closest margins for authorizing force by the Congress since the War of 1812! Yes, 80% of Americans supported expelling Iraq from Kuwait and protecting Saudi Arabia from invasion. There was no doubt Sadam would've kept going of he wasn't stopped. And yes, it was accomplished quickly because George senior was a decorated naval airman himself and no stranger to action. He had no plans to occupy the defeated Iraq, however. When the job was done, we were done. His incompetent draft-dodging kid, on the other hand...
.
there are still some people opposed to our troop presence in Afghanistan.
.
Oh yeah. I remember now... Bush's response to 9-11... the beginning of Bush's 'War on Terrorism'. The stated purpose of the invasion was to capture Osama bin Laden, and destroy al-Qaeda and its Taliban supporters. Is it 'mission accomplished' yet?
.
Only months after Bush declared he wanted bin Laden 'dead or alive' (2002), Bush said in a news conference, "I don't know where he is. I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him." He said that catching Osama was a 'low priority'! So, someone please tell me again why we invaded Afghanistan - and we're still there?
.
And where's Osama now, according to Bush's (ehem) 'intelligence' sources? I know, I know ...(Migisi raises and waves her hand)... he's in Iran!! "A-ten-hut!! Turn the tanks around, boys! We've got a new enemy to kill."
.
US public opinion is against the Iraq war now, BECAUSE the war was mismanaged and botched.
.
And remaining in Iraq will change that? Can more bloodshed on both sides rectify Bush's 'botching' and the ~illegitimacy~ of this war? You do know what the definition of 'insanity' is ... doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results. Remaining in Iraq IS insanity.

In response to Public opinion polls posted by Migisi:
.
Brian quipped, "US public opinion is against the Iraq war now, BECAUSE the war was mismanaged and botched."
.
Not!!
..
U.S. Public opinion has grown from the standing point that the war was wrong in its inception. America doesn't need to create pre-emptive war. American never needed to get into this God forsaken attempt to coral the energy resources for big business. Bush was wrong then and he is wrong now.
.
There may be a lot of Americans that agree with Brian's quip; but, at the root, it is that the war was wrong from the getty up.
.
The very choice to go to war proves the ineptness and stupidity of Bush.

In response to Not!! posted by pink101:

... the war was wrong from the getty up.
And based on LIES and DECEPTION from the getty up. The Downing Street Memo (aka Rycroft Memo - 23 July, 2002) proved Bush et al had already made plans to invade Iraq months before the 9-11 disaster, and had fabricated ("fixed") intel to justify it.
.
Quoting from:
Lies Without End Supporting Wars Without End
2008-01-31
http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=nod...
..."Human life is of equal value, never mind what religions may say about god's chosen people, never mind what presidents and politicians may say about threats from terrorists, therefore, we must also include those valuable lives lost by the Iraqis themselves.
.
"...When those responsible for the American war in Iraq face a public reckoning for their colossal crimes [Migisi: IF they ever do face that reckoning!], the weekend of September 15-16, 2007 will be an important piece of evidence against them. On Friday, September 14 there were brief press reports of a scientific survey by the British polling organization ORB, which resulted in an estimate of 1.2 million violent deaths in Iraq since the US invasion. This staggering figure demonstrates two political facts:
.
"1) the American war in Iraq has produced a humanitarian catastrophe of historic proportions, with a death total already higher than that in Rwanda in 1994;
.
"2) those arguing against a US withdrawal on the grounds that this would lead to civil war, even genocide, are deliberately concealing the fact that such a bloodbath is already taking place, with the US military in control."
.
.
I can not, and will not, support any candidate who voted in 2002 for Bush's invasion. Obama, Ron Paul, and Dennis Kucinich (who withdrew) are (were) the only Presidential candidates who voted against the Iraq invasion - from the getty up. ALL the others supported it (some say they regret that now), and ALL support continuing military presence to some degree.

» pink101 - Some News Out

.
Some news out today claims that Hillary is slipping behind Obama in California and there are predictions that he will win on Tuesday.
.
I do not think Hillary can win against Romney or McCain.
.
Nor do I think Romney or McCain can beat Obama.
.
As of now, I am supporting Obama.
.
http://www.newsmax.com/morris/Hillary_cr...
.
I think the dynastic politics will defeat Hillary hands down.
.
In McCain is the Republican nominee, he will be skunked and there will be a Democratic landslide. Old Johnny One Note is a loser for sure. All he knows is war.
