ProtestantismThe Golden Compass
« Previous 1 2 3 4 Next » » _Boanerges_ - from one of my favorite sites Society?s Insatiable Appetite for Evil! December Newsletter http://www.lasttrumpetministries.org/200... "Another great abomination is scheduled for December 7th, 2007, which is the seventy-sixth anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the empire of Japan. The great abomination scheduled for that day is the release of a new movie entitled The Golden Compass. The movie is based on a book by British author Philip Pullman entitled Northern Lights. It is to be released as a children?s movie, complete with religious allegories, talking animals, and a witchcraft device called an alethiometer, which uses divination to find truth. Every character in the movie is demon possessed and has a voice that guides him. The Golden Compass has similar themes as the Chronicles of Narnia and even begins with a girl hiding in a wardrobe. The book that the movie is taken from is actually part of a series in which a young girl struggles with God, who is presented as senile. Another character is an ex-nun, who describes Christianity as a powerful and convincing mistake. In the final book of the series, characters representing Adam and Eve witness the death of God! Al Mohler is a popular Southern Baptist minister and he's written what I think is a well-reasoned piece on The Golden Compass. http://www.almohler.com/blog.php Again, for the record, I'm not calling for a boycott. For various reasons, I myself will probably see this film.

I think Kim mentioned Eragon. How many of you read it and/or saw the movie? I thought the book was much better than the movie. My only complaint with the books - and I've read most of Eldest also - is that Paolini really can drag out sections much more than should be the case. The reader can get bogged down quickly. But the storylines are good and the characters are interesting. » Migisi - Reasoned Comment on Golden Compass In response to Reasoned Comment on Golden Compass posted by BrianTubbs:. From the linked article, Mohler writes: . "... The Christian faith is not about to be toppled by a film, nor by a series of fantasy books...." . I recall mentioning this. . "At the same time, nothing would serve his agenda better than to have Christians speaking recklessly or unintelligently about the film or the books." . Indeed, 'every knock is a boost'. . "Philip Pullman has an agenda, but so do we..." ('We' meaning Christians.) . Finally! A truthful admission. -- posted by Migisi

By the way, I don't disagree with everything you write, Migisi. Just chunks of it. » Migisi - Reasoned Comment on Golden Compass In response to Reasoned Comment on Golden Compass posted by BrianTubbs:. I thought you'd appreciate Mohler's remarks to some extent, because they do overlap with yours. . Well, he sounds like a man with at least ~one~ foot planted in reality. -- posted by Migisi » _Boanerges_ - The Mystical Science of the Golden Compass The Mystical Science of the Golden Compass By Berit Kjos - December 10, 2007 http://cuttingedge.org/articles/db099.ht... -- posted by _Boanerges_ « Previous 1 2 3 4 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
