» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Harry Potter, Boycotts, etc.

To everyone,

Contrary to Migisi's comments, there is a huge difference between "The Golden Compass" and "Harry Potter." J.K. Rowling (to my knowledge) never made any comments about how her agenda was to undermine Christian faith. She may (and apparently does) hold some views at odds with many Christians, but that's not the same thing as Pullman - who has categorically rejected Christianity itself (and who, like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins, is out to persuade as many as possible to reject it as well).

Now, LET ME BE CLEAR....

Pullman has EVERY RIGHT to do that. And people have EVERY RIGHT to see his films and read his books. But...we have every right to hold people accountable to what they've said. And, in this case, Pullman's agenda should be exposed for what it is. If people choose to support that agenda or (in Wendell's case) ignore it, that's their business. But at least I've done my part in telling them.

Oh, and for the record...I'm not calling for any boycotts here. In fact, since I'm taking part in a forum at Wilmington College (Ohio) on the subject of Hollywood and Christianity and since "The Golden Compass" is almost certain to be a topic of that forum, I'll probably see the movie myself. (And, like Wendell, I'm sure to enjoy the special effects).

Accountability relates to liability, as in a debt that is owed. What debt does this author owe?
.
I figure that if someone undercuts indefensible foundations and any flawed principles of something sacerdotal, the rest of society should consider the actions as a favor. Nothing liberates like the truth.
.
Young children are purposefully taught to believe in the magic powers of supernatural beings like Santa Claus as a pretext to what they will be led to believe as adults. It doesn't seem so bad to liberate them of such ideas when the proper time has come.

» Migisi - Tiresome Hype

In response to Tiresome Hype posted by BrianTubbs:

.
Philip Pullman has said (and I quote): "I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief." That's Pullman - IN HIS OWN WORDS!!
.
Your source for your quote, please?
.
And, so what if he is? Is the 'basis of Christian belief' SO TENUOUS that a fantasy movie or book can undermine it? Can a book/movie lead believers to chuck their faith? What, if any, impact did the 'Harry Potter' movies have on your faithful flock, Brian? Have they formed covens? Are they casting spells on you and riding on broomsticks on church grounds?
.
It may be "tiresome hype" (to your ears and eyes) to read me and other Christians warning parents about this man's avowed agenda. So be it.
.
My Irish gramma would say 'every knock is a boost' - meaning the more you knock a person or thing, the more people will want to see why. By your hype, you're actually ~promoting~ and providing free publicity. I bet he and the movie/book publicists planned on that. JK Rowling was an unknown until the Christians criticized her. Don't you get it? You're being USED.
.
I fully expect you to go see the movie and its sequels - and to enjoy them.
.
I won't know if I enjoy them until I see them. I've been disappointed before.
.
Based on Pullman's quote above, he's right up your alley.
.
Is aligning me with Pullman supposed to be an insult? If so, none taken.

For fifteen years, Medved served as president of PJC, which states that its mission is outreach to unaffiliated and disconnected Jews. In his book 'Right Turns: Unconventional Lessons from a Controversial Life', he states that his commitment to religion led to his conservative political outlook."

Actually, I knew this. Never did like the garden gnomes, griffin gargoyles, or those cement geese that people dress up. Hey, if you want to ward off evil spirits and keep the witches away, install a garden 'gazing globe'... (such superstitious silliness!) http://www.ponddoc.com/WhatsUpDoc/YardAr...
.
According to the article, seems like all the Christmas nativity scene figurines would be considered idols too, ay? Better get rid of em. (wink)

» EvilChihuahua - My rant about HDM

In response to New movie posted by Migisi:

Gather round, children, it's time for other of "Kim's Rants".

Pfft. Aweful books, and I'm not saying that for it's religious sub plots. Pullman has his knickers in a twist about Narnia, and he thought he could do better than Lewis, so he copied him. I know in todays world it's hard to write something that hasn't been done before, but come on, everything single scene reminded me of something I'd read before, mostly in LotR and Narnia. I saw the preview for this film a few months back. I couldn't believe the trailer was comparing it to LotR. I mean Tolkien's works were timeless and had so much originality, depth, emotion, humour and lovible, original characters, whilst Pullman's works are uninspiring, boring, unoriginal and the characters were far too 1 dimentional, and I hardily found a hand full I could care about or relate to.

I find it laughible that people are comparing him to Tolkien. If there is any modern day author that is in Tolkien's league it's Rowling. While her books do contain themes that are hardily Godly and I wouldn't want a Harry Potter book in my house, when I did read the books a while back I thought they were well written, she took her time trying to make the reader love the heroes and hate the villians, she gave the characters depth and then took time to develope each and every one of them and she created a world (and sport) so complex it's hard to image it all came from one single person's mind. Pullman on the other hand is more like that guy who wrote Eragon, although Eragon was far more enjoyable, even if I did hate it.

The way I see it, Pullman spent way too much time trying to piss off Narnia fans and Christians when he should have been working on trying to write something exciting and brilliant. Frankly I'm surprised that so many people praise this crap, and that it's been made into a movie, but then again, I remind myself about Eragon.

Hi Kim. Nice to see you posting here again. What's HDM? High Def Movie?
.
...Lewis, so he copied him.
.
Pullman, and the movie producers, are cashing in on a proven-profitable theme. Can't blame em for going with what works. They expect to make $150 million.
.
I mean Tolkien's works were timeless and had so much originality, depth, emotion, humour and lovible, original characters,
.
Tolkien was a literary genius. No doubt about it.
.
whilst Pullman's works are uninspiring, boring, unoriginal and the characters were far too 1 dimentional,..
.
Pullman's writes kid's books. Tolkien had a ~far~ broader range. Personally, I don't think the Lord of the Rings fantasy books were really written for kids. I started reading The Hobbit when I was 12, and found it far too complicated and difficult to follow - too many characters and places to keep straight. Sure, Froto and friends were physically short, but they were not children (nor were they treated like children by the other characters). Harry Potter and friends were clearly youngsters which a young reader could relate to. Hence, their popularity. In Pullman's books, Lyra, the main character, is a 12-year-old girl - appealing to the tween girl readers and gamers. Since you're not a girl child, perhaps that's why you're not inspired?
.
I agree with your critique that Tolkien and Rowling are better writers than Pullman. I don't have a vested interest in Pullman's books, movies, or games. So, it's no concern to me that they become popular or not.
.
...although Eragon was far more enjoyable, even if I did hate it.
.
Confused. Did you hate or enjoy Eragon? Did you see the movie?
.
Frankly, I think the Compass movie was made to kick off the new vid game. Sure, they'll make money on the movie, but I think games are far more profitable. Sega obviously thinks so. No doubt we'll find Lyra, Roger, etc. and daemon action figures included inside McDonald's Kids Meals.
