» pink101 - How Many Are There

.
Imaginary Worlds!
.
How many are there out there?
.
These guys that are called by the titles, Ayatollah and Mullah, how about them?
.
What skills do they need to possess in order to lead millions of people to the death of their true selfs? They live in imaginary worlds created out of the basic institutions of religionism. And, we let ourselves be forced to go along with their insanity.
.
When will we stand up to them for what they are instead of acting like they have some legitimacy?
.
Sick!
.

Interesting that you opened a thread on the Golden Compass which seems to be about the imaginary world. I saw the trailer and the first five minutes of the film. I seldom go to movies; but, I will see this one--maybe this Friday.
.
Do you think it is a critique on religion?

Can't comment until I see it.
.
Clearly, Bill Donohue (president of the Catholic League) thinks this movie is a slam against the Catholic Church in particular (Protestants should applaud, no?). Billy says it's the 'bait' to ensnare children in Pullman's 'pernicious atheist agenda'. .
Obviously, Billy never heard his Irish gramma say 'Every knock is a boost'. The more outcry against the Compass, the more people will want to see what all the fuss is about. The Anti-Defamation League's objections made 'The Passion' a box office hit. I predict the same will happen with this movie.

» pink101 - Davis & Moore

.
Kingsley Davis and Wilbert E. Moore have done some important work religion as an important and integral part of society.
.
I want to put some quotes in here from "Some Principles of Stratification," which was published in the American Sociological Review, Vol. 100, in 1945. Under the heading of Major Society Functions and Stratification, sub-head of Religion:
"The reason why religion is necessary is apparently to be found in the fact that human society achieves its unity primarily through the possession by its members of certain ultimate values and ends in common. Although these values and ends are subjective, they influence behavior, and their integration enables the society to operate as a system."
.
