Pink, I think you're defending Migisi against an attack that's not there. I have taken issue with her cynicism, not her character or her contributions to the discussions here at Suite101.

Migisi, if I offended you, let me know.

In response to Cynicism and Plane Crashes posted by Migisi:

Yeah, Migisi, that baffles me as well. Brother Jones brought this up in a different thread. I told him while I'll say now. I suspect that the Oral Roberts Board wants to give the university namesake and grandson the benefit of the doubt - and chalk the issues up to competence failures rather than character failures.

Character failures?

I thought all the hub bub was about fraud in that someone was being conned and Richard was doing it.

I understand there were sexual improprieties. Is that right?

What was it that Lindsey was supposed to have done? Are we to be allowed to know?

I'm thinking that in order to retain the college's name ("Oral Roberts" U), they struck a deal with the Roberts family. Think of all the paperwork and letterhead they'd have to change. In any other corporation or university, these people would be removed and prosecuted, Bri. They wouldn't be kept on in any capacity, especially if it involved the IRS.
.
Let's look at the allegations against the Roberts family:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article...
(quote) "The entire lawsuit is available in a PDF document online. [I've posted the link below.] Within the document are many more allegations including: tremendous personal expenses used exclusively for the Roberts family but paid for by the Oral Roberts University and Oral Roberts Ministry budgets, illegal and inappropriate conduct by the Roberts' daughters and their friends (including vandalism, theft, and underage drinking) that has been sanctioned and covered up by Richard and Lindsay Roberts, ORU dormitories being extensively remodeled for the exclusive use of Roberts children and their friends, over $50,000 of clothing purchases for Lindsay Roberts paid by ORU and ORM budgets, text messages sent by Lindsay Roberts to underage males between 1 AM and 3 AM using cell phones paid for by the ORU and ORM budgets, University employees required to complete homework assignments for the Roberts children to turn in to Victory Christian School, and ORU security personnel running personal errands for the Roberts family while on ORU payroll and using ORU funds." (end)
.
Add to that, Robert's orders to an accountant to 'cook the books' and lie to the IRS, sexual harassment, inappropriate involvement in a mayoral race (a violation of 501C3 law, using university funds and resources, coercing staff and students to campaign for family friend Randy Miller - and wrongful termination of staff who objected).
.
Read the lawsuit here:
http://www.fox23.com/media/news/0/7/3/07...
.
I do think this is not a matter of incompetence, but directly exposes their character.

In response to Oral Roberts posted by Migisi:

Migisi (and Phil), I agree. I think Oral Roberts and his son are corrupt. I'm not defending the ORU Board of Regents. I was just trying to guess at their rationale. I think ORU should completely disassociate from the Roberts family, rename the school, and totally fumigate (sp?) the place.

A pretty interesting breakdown on Oral Roberts University's operations and funding:

.
A MERGER of ORU with Pat Robertson's Regent University? Yikes!! Sounds like Robertson is buying or bailing them out. The vultures circle...
.
http://webapps.oru.edu/alumniweb/news/al...
Statement from George Pearsons - Chairman, ORU Board of Regents
11/29/2007
"We are pleased to report that Dr. Pat Robertson, president and chancellor of Regent University and long-time friend of Oral Roberts University, has contacted members of the board of regents and has expressed interest in exploring options for the future of ORU with Regent University. Dr. Robertson is sending a team on Monday to Tulsa to meet with ORU Regents and administrative representatives."

.
I think ORU better remove Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, and Benny Hinn -- who are on ORU's 'Business' Board of Regents -- given the federal investigations on all three. And I'd finish my fumigation by dumping Hagee off the Regent's Board too.

Perhaps ORU alumni Ted Haggard should join this 'ORU-out' group:

» pink101 - Sooner Or Later

In response to Oral Roberts and son are corrupt posted by Migisi:
.
Brian and Migisi have put some highly relevant questions on the table here.
.
These highly successful televangelists make up the vanguard community that is responsible for having created the Religious Right in American politics.
.
I recall Oral Roberts when he first started out with his healing ministry on television. Must have been around 1950 or so--well before color t-v. Bishop Sheen was in that same era along with Billy Graham who was also breaking into television with specials. Remember when Oral Roberts saw the 600 foot tall Jesus? How many times has God threatened him for not following directions. When Richard made his claim about God insisting he resign his post, I thought of the death threat God gave the old man.
.
The 700 Club was an afternoon television show that hooked a lot of stay at home housewives. And, then along came Jim Bakker who took the country by storm selling time shares in a Christian theme park he was building in the Carolinas. Falwell and Robertson were his strong competitors and they took him down.
.
When you've lived long enough, you see that all this stuff is something that has evolved over the years just like the automobile industry. And, you see the hand writing on the wall that signals there is a societal end to it. All the different sides keep chipping away at each other. Sooner or later you get the picture.
