Maybe somebody can try to explain why they would let Richard back on campus as some sort of spiritual advisor to the board. That makes no sense to me.

My GUESS is that they are giving him the benefit of the doubt, preferring to see his failure as one of competence rather than one of character. Thus, they regard him as a capable spiritual advisor and counselor - but as a failed administrator.

Personally, I think they're wrong (on the character part), but that's my guess.
