In response to Huckleberry posted by pink101:

Don't know Huckabee's specific views on faith-based initiatives. My own view is that SOME faith-based initiatives are BETTER than fully secular initiatives. Alcoholics Anonymous would be an example of an effective faith-based initiative, and I have no problem with AA receiving some taxpayer support and/or taxpayer-funded courts ordering people to get AA treatment. But perhaps a separate thread on that?

Back to Huckabee...you're right about his being more progressive than many other Republicans on social benefits and services. He's actually one of the moderates running. I like him.

I see Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee both echoing themes from William Jennings Bryan. For those of you who have studied Bryan (and he was anything BUT the caricature from Inherit the Wind), you'll know what I'm talking about.

Most Americans are what has been called, Bi-conceptual when it comes to being progressive or conservative.
.
I know I am and I see Migisi sez she likes Ron Paul.
.
Very few of us are single minded when it comes to politics.
.
Huckleberry Mike might be the People's Choice before this is all over. It DOES look as though he is head and shoulders above the rest of the Republicans.
.
And, who do the Democrats have?
.
Edwards?
.
I heard an interesting report of Mike the other day. He started out in radio when he was thirteen years old. They say that he is very hard to beat when he gets going. From what I'm getting from some interested parties, there may have been a shift away from Rudy G. last night.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Best Democrat

In response to Huckabee Sounding Progressive posted by pink101:

I think Barack Obama is the most articulate and most visionary candidate the Democrats have going right now. His weakness is a lack of experience, but I don't think that should rule him out. It's just something he needs to take steps to compensate for.

Otherwise, I think Bill Richardson has some solid credentials and some decent ideas to offer the Democratic Party.

In terms of predictions....I think Hillary is going to lose the nomination. Six weeks ago, I would've said Hillary was going to win. I don't see that now. It's going to be Obama or Edwards for the Democrats. Or...maybe...Al Gore. If Hillary stumbles anymore, I think Gore jumps in.

What are the issues that will be uppermost in the 2008 elections?
.
I think they are and in the following order:
.
#1. Economy -- It's in a shambles no matter what Wall Street sez.
#2. Healthcare. -- The time is right.
#3. Jobs -- Something has to be done about illegal immigration and free trade.
#4. Ending the Iraqi Occupation -- It is our sickness--it must end.
#5. Religionism -- It has to be backed off or it will hurt those that promote it.
.
If this list is correct, the Democrats will win hands down. Whichever Democrat wins the nomination will win the presidency.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Response to your issues

In response to Best Democrat posted by pink101:

Pink, you listed out these issues as most important in the upcoming race....

Let me say that (speaking as an analyst rather than advocate) I really do believe Huckabee is the best candidate for the GOP. And it's because of some of the above issues - specifically, the top 3.

Economy - Huckabee has said that, while the macro-economy is showing progress and strength, that's NOT being felt by most working Americans, and certainly not those living in poverty or low-income status. That populist message and sensitivity is precisely what the Republicans need to have a chance in 08. Otherwise, they're going to get schooled!

Health care - Huckabee's weight loss story plays VERY well here. And he's said (correctly) that MUCH of our health care crisis can be solved if people live more responsibly and make the right choices in their lifestyles. This is where eating right, exercise, etc. comes in. And he's right. And, again, his story plays GREAT here. But, of course, that's not ALL of our health care problem. And I think Huckabee is far more sensitive and genuine - and yes, populist - in dealing with it than Romney, Guiliani, Thompson, McCain, etc.

Jobs - Same comments as above. Huckabee is saying the right things on jobs. Check these out...

He's my guy. I know he loses your vote, and Migisi's, and Paper Turtle's and others here (if I'm assuming too much..I apologize) on other issues like religion, the war, etc. And that's fine. I'm not trying to persuade YOU all. I'm just explaining why I like him - and why I think he really is the best candidate for the GOP.
