If you have a few minutes, you might explore this link. If it is interesting to you, you can watch the video.

Is morality innate in human beings?

» pink101 - Brian's Article, Nietzsche

.
Brian's article, Depressing Thought from Nietzsche, is quite interesting taking the videos from MIT that I linked in the above post.
.
Are human beings born with a built in morality that is universal to all of us regardless of any other consideration? Did the Nazi Germans know better or did they think they were carrying out some form of higher morality?
.
(I WOULD like to learn how to get involved in the "blogs" at Suite 101. There are some very interesting articles at the American History site where discussion threads are not allowed; but blogs are.)

The article, being a blog, doesn't allow for an automatic discussion thread as I understand it.

Help?

Pink, you're signed up as a contributing writer now, right? You can apply for the American History post. It's once again vacant. And then you get a blog as a feature writer. And once a site gets a feature writer, then the discussion board gets opened up.

Pink, I haven't had time to watch the video, but the subject matter is interesting. I would say that Christians have nothing to fear about this research - at least on its face. The apostle Paul tells us in Romans 1-2 that the "law" (a reference to God's divine moral code) is "written in our hearts." So, the Bible teaches that a moral awareness is hard-wired into our DNA.

And...it's also fairly clear that biological development, maturity, and culture all play a part in influencing our moral awareness.

Not that I know of.
.
I don't know enough about American History to be a feature writer.
.
I can do research on this or that subject; but, I don't have a good enough grasp on how the various aspects fit in together--if such is possible to know.

In response to Brian's Article, Nietzsche posted by BrianTubbs:

Whatever is supposed to be hardwired into us, is interesting.

I watched the interactive, quality TV program 'Insight' last night about "resilience" and the myriad responses we label 'resilience'. Some research tells us that up to 2 thirds of us have a resilience gene that when triggered, will get us through the crises in our lives (such as 911, Columbine**, horrific burns, childhood cancer etc etc and our own Port Arthur** experiences) better than anticipated. But equally 2 thirds of us have a depression gene awaiting incitement. I'm awaiting reading anything about 'equal opportunity' being hardwired.

Whatever 'moral code' resides within, maybe we don't all have the same opportunities in life to read it the same way...if in fact it has universal (international) relevance despite life.

Perhaps hardwired is not the correct idea. It might be more to the point that the brain is sectioned off for use as we have different rooms for different purposes in our homes.
