» pink101 - Emergent

.
The idea of something emerging can be portrayed in numerous ways.
.
A grain of wheat falling into the ground: Within that grain--the seed--there is a part that emerges from the hulk as the old grain dies. New life springs forth and its sprout breaks through the surface reaching for the light.
.
It is high time a new understanding of our spirituality comes into being.
.
Some of the seeds will fall on good soil; some will fall among weeks and thorns, and; others will fall by the wayside.
.
One of the most interesting actions of all is the way the thorns from the old religionism are making such strong efforts to choke out the new emerging life while they try to scare their followers to continue believing in their long held traditional misunderstandings. They do NOT want their promulgations deconstructed so all can see their mistaken dogmatism.
.

» Brother_Jones - The God's Aren't Angry Tour

I'm headed over to San Antonio this cold windy night for The God's Aren't Angry Tour. And I'm wondering if anyone here is cool and hip enough to know much if anything about this church movement. I think you have to be born after 1970 to really get all of it, and those of us born much earlier see red.

From what I've found: Rob Bell's lecture is part anthropology, part history, part deconstruction - exploring how humans invented religion to make themselves feel better.
.
Take notes and share them with us, won't you?

and those of us born much earlier see red.
.
We oldsters might just 'get all of it'. Ya never know.

.
I suppose the "Emergent Church" represents post modernity's penchant for not taking tradition as the gospel truth of anything.
.
I was on the cutting edge of that movement and positioned myself there by asking questions that had previously been forbidden.
.
I can tell you that the different religious groups to which I belonged didn't like my questioning one little bit. I eventually had to leave the groups because of my ways. And, I have to use great caution in what subjects get brought up in any family gatherings. I can list the subjects that are taboo. A person can come close to being considered dead and buried.

.
The Iraq War of Occupation -- Definitely not taboo. NOBODY in my immediate or extended family supports it. Not even the inlaws. It's a topic discussed frequently.
.
Jesus -- Not taboo per se. He just rarely comes up in conversation.
.
Fundamentalism -- My family wouldn't know anything about Fundamentalism. They're Catholics. (wink)
.
George W. Bush -- Fair game and open season. NOBODY supports him. Not even my dyed-in-the-wool Republican husband (who, BTW, supports Ron Paul for President).
.
Our family taboos: abortion, and the right-to-die.
