» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Worldview

I think it's fair to say that one of the most divisive questions in the world today is...

What is your worldview? Is it one based on an external, objective framework of Truth or is it one based on subjective, perspectival relativism?

I like this video clip from William Lane Craig...

What happens to the person who watches that video and who doesn't agree with its message?
.
The video presents one of the major questions with which we are faced now that postmodernism is well upon us. In fact, the question comes out of postmodernism--it wouldn't have been asked before World War II.
.
On a deeper note, the question begs the idea of knowledge and of who or what it is that has the authority to possess higher knowledge.
.
Suppose that knowledge has been discovered that proves beyond any doubt that extraterestial life exists and that its agents have visited Earth and have not only had contact with select authorities; but, continue to maintain regular relationship with them. The question just posed above wonders if that authority would release the information to the general population. Or, would such an authority keep that knowledge from us because it would destroy our ideas of objective morality that are raised in the video Brian linked?
.
An even more remote question might be if government should be in charge of knowledge or should "private enterprise" possess it.
.
It must be said that some of our government officials act in strange ways when it comes to making decisions that impinge on the pulbic welfare.
.

I've often wondered if those strange acting government officials aren't the "extraterestial life" - the space aliens. They're 'out there'. (wink)

We do have a historian here.
.
I wonder, Brian, what influence the pirates as space aliens had on government during that time when the world market was so opened up to the multinationals of that day? Was that during the sixteenth through the nineteenth century when capitalist piracy was running so wildly? They certainly seem to be having quite an influence today.
.
Can you speak to that?

In response to Worldview posted by pink101:

To the extent that postmodernism challenges us to look again at some of our assumptions and/or to approach life from different perspectives, it has been very helpful and has contributed much to our society.

To the extent that postmodernism, however, has caused us to question knowledge and truth themselves, it has become very dangerous.

I categorically reject the notion that it is impossible to acquire and/or to possess knowledge. Obviously, a person can't possess ALL knowledge. No human being is all-knowing, but human beings can know SOME things. And some things are indeed known.

If by "it" you mean life itself, I sure do agree with you.
.
When the truth of the matter strikes us smack dab in the middle of our face, we are forced to recognize just how dangerous our time has come to be.
.
You are absolutely correct again.
.
Holding on to past stories only helps us kid ourselves that all is okay. It IS NOT all okay. Our present political leadership is headed for a catastrophic collision with reality. Things must change.
.

So do I; but, knowledge can be kept from us as it has been in the past. When our political leaders get legislation that allows them to keep secret information from us, we are screwed and screwed good.
.
Face it.

Mercenaries? Pirates? Multinationals? Laws unto themselves?
.
Does that help?
.
Remember Captain John Morgan? The Barbary Coast? Piracy? The High Seas?
.
It's all out there even though it is highly sophisticated. The world market has been opened and "things" are happening and I'm sure you have noticed.

It was the "space alien" part that threw me off. I didn't know what I, as a student of history, could offer on that subject. happy

Piracy could be considered organized theft. I don't believe multinational corporations are engaging in deliberate, organized theft. However...I do believe that capitalism contributes to materialism, which contributes to greed, which (if left unchecked) leads to lawlessness, piracy, theft, etc. So, some of that is happening...yes. And we need to figure out how to "check" global capitalism. I agree.

Hurrah!
.
Can you see, in the question being faced in Australia, where they are trying to settle the differences between the indigenous peoples and the citizenry that both peoples are victims?
.
Do you see that is the case in America where the Native Americans were forced to give up their claim to the land to our ancestors, that both the surviving Natives, as well as those of us that are the descendants of the raping and pillaging frontiersmen, are equally victims in our own ways?
.
Do you see that?
