- Is Jesus God?
Migisi, you're going to make me drag out my Bible commentaries. Sheesh.
Off the top of my head (before looking at the commentaries), I would say that CONTEXT IS EVERYTHING when reading the Bible. I'm not one of those ultra-literalists who just lifts phrases out and verses out and builds entire theologies around them. This is among the problems of ultra,ultra-fundies like Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist. Of course, he has other "issues" as well.![]()
Anyhoo...
The context of the Old Testament is that it was written at a time when POLYTHEISM was rampant. The psalmist was making the point that GOD - the one true God - judges the other 'gods.' For an audience sympathetic to polytheism (and the ancient Israelites kept drifting in that direction), this was essentially a statement that Jehovah God will be the judge as to who and what can be legitimately called a "god."
But, I will get out my commentaries to verify that my shoot-from-the-hip 'commentary' is accurate.

Why would it be heresy for you, Jones, Brian, or any believer in the Bible God, to claim the same?
I would certainly oppose Brian or anybody who claimed to be equal with God in substance. Or in other words, not only many gods but many equal gods. This verse is lost on the reader without its context in both testaments. The substance of the argument is whether Jesus was the same flesh and blood as you and I. There are certainly many on the earth who believe that they are Gods. You can usually tell their persuasion in religion by their hatred of the God of the Christians.
Or the argument turned into the idea that Jesus was just like you in every way including a sin nature. Or basic humanism which would say that Jesus was born from natural causes perhaps with the assistance of a lying whore. Christians believe that Jesus was God and had no earthly father. Heretics preach and teach otherwise.

I get confused to now analyse your sentence that starts with "I didn't say..." I don't maintain a library of my posts to cut & paste in an 'I said/he said' exchange. And I try to be concise believe it or not.
But there was a context to my posts beyond your perspective of the concept of 'prayer'.
When I referred to your comment, you will see I left it unfinished by placing ... after the comment. I was referring to the totality of the concept of prayer which is not as black & white to me.
So, if as you say the Bible says God doesn't promise to answer prayer and the Bible intends it to be understood that way
http://www.bible-truth.org/msg54.html (Huh???)
then it doesn't detract from my point that the issue is open to question for me. If God promises or not to get those into heaven by whatever required measure and to cease Earthly suffering post-death, tis another issue.
I don't know what you ARE saying by saying "I'm not saying" but is it answering my reply to you at post 17??

In the other topic, I posted:
"...There is an apparently related issue re prayer. I agree with Brian...God has to exist and one has to believe in God before any belief in prayer has any chance of being functional. Then whether an answered prayer is a deserved reward for that belief...or an 'evidence' that God changes his mind or actively intervenes in our lives...is of no great moment if in fact prayer IS answered. That turns to our relative understanding of what an answered prayer "looks like"...."
and is in context to the extract of my post that Brian responded to.

I was gonna say something, but Brian already had it all covered, and anything I would have said would be copying him.

In response to Is Jesus God? posted by Migisi:Then you can understand why the Jews would oppose Jesus and the claims
Well, it is very hard to change Religions. lol. At least you and I have that in common. When I left the Church of Christ and joined the Charismatics long, long ago, I had the Elders on my doorstep every couple of weeks pleading me to rejoin the the true faith. I did spend a bunch of nights thinking about their complaint that I was opposing Jesus. I can respect any Jew who struggles with the entire notion of Jesus. It ain't easy.

- Christians and Jews
Migisi, I have a dear uncle who is Jewish - devoutly so. I respect him and love him with all my heart. But that doesn't mean I have to abandon my belief in the Bible or in Christ. He has a right to his religious faith - a right I will not EVER seek to deprive him of. But that doesn't mean I have to agree with him or cower away from proclaiming my faith.
