Well, it's not really about her, it's about praying for someone who needs it, and after all, Ms. Spears is just as human as the people in Darfur and Iraq.
.
Spears' egocentricity, lust for attention, and self-destructive bratty behavior gets more media coverage than 450,000 dead from violence and disease in Darfur (most were Christians, BTW), and over a million starving refugees. And more sound and video bytes than 38,000+ dead Iraqi civilians. Unlike Spears, they didn't cause their own misery. Sorry, but my prayers go for people who really need and ~deserve~ them.
.
Perhaps we can pray that she use her millions on helping them instead of using it on herself.
.
Well, you can pray for that, but don't hold your breath. Her millions will go to her defense attorneys.

In response to Pray for Britney Spears posted by Migisi:

Migisi, you're not being fair at all. Our media-driven culture (I partly agree with Pink's analysis on this point) is saturating our consciousness with Britney Spears and the Hollywood celebrity culture. There come times when people like us need to stand up and say: "Enough!"

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - More Important Issues

To follow up on Migisi's point...

One of the things that frustrates me here is that I agree with what you're saying, Migisi, and - YET - you're saying it in a way that chides me for commenting on Britney Spears. You're introducing conflict where there needn't be any.

Of course, there are more important issues than Britney Spears, and I've used this blog to talk about them. Issues such as...

http://protestantism.suite101.com/blog.c...

http://protestantism.suite101.com/blog.c...

http://protestantism.suite101.com/blog.c...

The above are just a random sampling. I don't have time to go back through all my blogs. The point is that I agree with you, but sometimes, we need to MAKE THE POINT that our culture has gone too far.

What triggered the blog that you are criticizing was reading that DJ had started a suicide prediction campaign - taking bets on when Britney would end it all. That's way beyond the pale, and I think people need to stand up and say so.

I make no apologies for doing so.

I think YOU are trolling for argument where there is none, Bri. I asked a question. Aren't we feeding that obsessed, superficial, shallow culture by engaging in celebrity gossip?
.
What triggered the blog that you are criticizing was reading that DJ had started a suicide prediction campaign.
.
So, what triggered you to write was the outrageous behavior of a shock jock - a radio DJ who used Spears' outrageous behavior to make himself a celebrity, right? I guess we should be praying for Spears ~and~ the DJ, ay?

Let's put our prayers in action.
.
Let's begin to spend more effort on the development of our children.
.
The idea of such a societal institution as education is not for the benefit of only one class. It is for the benefit of the entire society. And, as such, we should be putting as much effort into educating the under classes as we are to the upper classes. America needs an educational program that provides equal education to all its children; which means that we must provide free higher education to all Americans.
.
And, we must be able to take our K-12 system to task for the failures it is having with the under classes. I am very upset with our public school systems. We need some national dialog on education. The Republican Party will NEVER consider such a concept that provides free higher education regardless of economic ability to pay. Free for all--period.
.
Do you want to call that socialism? Go ahead. I call it democracy.

"What triggered the blog...was reading that DJ had started a suicide prediction campaign - taking bets on when Britney would end it all. That's way beyond the pale, and I think people need to stand up and say so."

Absolutely agree.

Whatever else one might say about Britney's "minders" I reckon they're also are as clueless as some other people are about limiting mental health problems in the lives of people they may care about.

"Of course there are more important issues than..." ( (insert any individual's name" )and society can surely be relied on to ignore accordingly.

Tall poppies (eg Britney) come and go like a change in the breeze but they also reflect that no-one is immune from these problems nor of the stigma it attracts. What may possibly be useful or helpful is the public "outing" of these things which go far beyond Britney's input. Some rush to ridicule, others use it for knee-jerk reactions to lobby for change until the public attention dies down. But there can with luck, be longer term value in getting it into the public domain.

I'm not sure praying has done much for the besieged peoples of Iraq nor the homeless mentally ill so why should Britney be singled out for special attention?

You're stretching to take this from society's fixation on Britney Spears to "we need to provide free higher education to all Americans." But, okay, I'll play along...

First...let's drop the word "free." SOMEONE is going to pay for it.

Second...I think higher education is undergoing a MASSIVE restructuring right now. Distance learning is the current wave and it's changing higher education as we know it. And...there might be a way to take advantage of that and accomplish what YOU are looking for. Perhaps the federal government can provide MAJOR tax breaks, incentives, and even (in some cases) block grants to companies, organizations, institutions, etc. to make distance learning education available as the low-cost or no-cost alternative to traditional higher education. (When I say "low-cost" or "no-cost," I refer to the student).

Perhaps a separate thread? If you want to start one, we can follow this out some more.
