» paper_turtle - But *why* do we pray?
In response to Celebrities posted by Migisi:
Prayer is supposed to be dialogue not monologue. We don't pray to tell God what to do; we pray to talk *with* him about how we need to become better persons.
I pray for the people who annoy me, not to change them and make them less annoying, but so that I can change my attitude towards them and love them better.
I pray for those who have treated me badly not for revenge but for help in reaching the point of peace and forgiveness.
I pray about social issues not to tell God how he should cure these problems, but so God can tell me how **I** can help him make things better.
I pray about people like Britney to learn how I can do something constructive instead of just fretting about how bad it is.
And I spend a lot of time being absolutely quiet so I can hear what he has to say.
peace and love,
Paper Turtle

- But *why* do we pray?
PT, this makes too much sense for our discussion.
:)
Seriously...prayer is supposed to be interactive, and (you're right) it's supposed to be as much about our listening as our asking. in fact, it's suppposed to be MORE about our listening.
Most people, however, don't have the patience to "be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)

I like the story I heard from Dr. Schuler regarding the man in the boat who lost his oars. He would throw his anchor out in front and pull on the rope until the anchor was in his hands again. Then he would throw it out again and repeat the action until he could step out on land. His question was, did he pull the boat to shore or did he pull the shore to the boat. Schuler said, that's how prayer is--are you pulling God down to you or are you pulling yourself up to God?

I like to think Paper Turtle has the right responses here to what prayer could/should be about...subject to my earlier stated reservations. ![]()
"In fact she was the main cause of that marriage falling apart."
expresses a belief I'm unable to comment on, not knowing the relative strengths of McFadden's marriage nor Delta's pulling power. Aaarghhh! The relative truths of OZ & USA showbiz gossip keep me underwhelmed.
But what makes a universally accepted role model if the 'we' among 'us' set them up to knock them down? Do we really want 'peer pressure' to have more power so we escape personal accountability? Look...everything's fne here but we should produce our own broad-based role models and not rely on the USA for them. But will we???
Nor rely on drug-challenged AFL 'star', 'legend', 'hero' Ben Cousins who the TV "girls" say still looks great without his shirt. Just don't knock Kasey Chambers! ABC OK?

Good story Phil; we should be pulling ourselves up to God, not trying to make him like us.

Can someone tell me the purpose of the reference to Delta Dawn in the subject line of these last several posts?
