LIFE: The Teacher
;
What have you learned from life-so far?
.
Looking into life as the schoolroom out of which we take our most important lessons does not seem as though it is heavily considered by most folk. Nor do most of us seem to be in search of any answers which may--after all--only lead us to some further perplexity. Generally, we try settling on some respected authority for the greater answers. For example, Muslims look to the writings they find in their beloved Koran where they find their unquestionable answers-often with the help of some spiritual leader of renown.
.
Life-itself-might be seen as the teacher that gives and the provider of classrooms out of which we can take our most valuable lessons. So, it seems particularly interesting that we turn away from those around us that have been in class the longest.
.
How does anyone think we should intelligently we go about qualifying any persons to whom we should pay any attention? Any suggestions?
.

I'm mulling over that last question still, Pink. It's a good one.

The first thought that comes to mind is the Golden Rule. In that spirit, I think we should give everyone the benefit of the doubt. That's what we would want, is it not?

As to when a person forfeits any "qualification" to be listened to respectfully and/or seriously...that's where the controversy begins. I'm still mulling this one over.

Maybe there are other questions we need to ask ourselves before we can answer?

It's a tough call.

But, experience has to play an important part.

I think one clear answer would be...

When a person ceases trying to persuade or reason and just wants to vent in an abusive and inflammatory manner, you are not violating any moral or democratic principle to simply walk away.

However, I think this should by and large be applied to the argument rather than the person. In other words, a person may be reasonable most of the time, but occasionally become unreasonable. I don't think you block such a person out entirely and across the board.

In response to Qualification posted by BrianTubbs:
.
When we come to the table with a preconceived idea of what is and is not a correct view on any issues, and when any of the other persons challenge our preconceptions, we are often put off and decide that they are unworthy of our respect as an authority. We can be recalcitrant in such a situation.
.
Each and every one of us.

I include myself.
