» redback - Australia Day

In response to Of Bush's boozing... posted by redback:

Another excuse for a Bush booze-up BUT that's OK!

I'm guessing the 14 January has no importance to you guys...the day the British on winning the war conceded the USA was more trouble than it's worth so ratified the Treaty. happy

Today, in history, 24 January 1788, the First Fleet is getting ready to sail from Botany Bay to Sydney Cove...to settle Australia...aka to invade Aboriginal Australia. Who should sail into Botany Bay but two French frigates...commanded by a chap we named La Perouse after.

Had the French decided to settle any part of Australia, it may well have become a French colony...an isolated place to replace Mururoa Atoll ie to test bombs. Come to think of it, the British had fun at our expense, at Maralinga. happy

A seque to 26 January...Australia Day. Because it falls on a Saturday, we've got a public holiday on Monday...another long weekend. happy Health permitting...I'm off to Sydney Harbour to watch the Tall Ships, the ferry races etc etc.

PS: What happens if July 4 happens on a weekend?
