» pink101 - Perfect American English

In response to of things Pink posted by redback:
.
happy
.
There's a common sense here in Michigan that we speak the American version of English most nearly perfect of any speakers in the entire world. It's a Mid-Western thing--we have no local idioms--just perfectly great English ala American. Our enunciation is perfect.
.
heh heh heh
.
happy
.
Oh! There are some hillbillies who have come into Michigan from Ohohoho and other points south like Tennessee, Kentucky, and Okies from Oklahoma and, well, maybe they are the ones you are talking about?
.
But, even our Canadian cousins in Windsor and Sarnia speak perfect American English except that they don't know how to pronounce the word, schedule.
.
Hope your sense of humor is set for "on" today.

I dunno, Pink. Sometimes I type here REAL slow to help the slow readers. ABC happy

enunc8:
"The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain" sounds great for those claiming to be not wet behind the ears. BTW: Do you pronounce 'ASK' as AKS and cry out BOO-YEAH at the number '26'? It may not be a Michigan thing but I'm relatively new to your version of linguistics. happy

Today, I'm getting a bit of a runaround between the council and shopping centre over pedestrian safety...so I'm having a bit of fun. No point in enunciating though. Following their rules means dragging knuckles on the ground. happy

Isn't schedule pronounced 'timetable'? Or 'things you can't keep to'?

Yes, gang banger pronunciation is 'ax'. For those with tongue piercings, it's 'athk'. Tee hee.
.
and cry out BOO-YEAH at the number '26'?
.
It's BOO-yuh (short 'u')... like the French fish stew BOO-yuh sans the 'bais' (bouillabaisse). Michiganners do serve it up in the UP. (wink and happy )
.
Isn't schedule pronounced 'timetable'? Or 'things you can't keep to'?
.
In my house, 'schedule' is often pronounced 'I'll have to check mine'. happy

You meant Michiganders, right?

The U.P. is another world, hey? Those people up are are not Michiganders, they are Yoopers!
.
Before Mighty Mack* was built, there was strong talk of creating the State of Superior. Many Yoopers would still go for that. There are bumper stickers all over Michigan that state, "Say Yah To The U.P. Too, Ay?" You say that with an accent of the "Ay".
.

.
.

* Mighty Mack is the bridge at the Straits of Mackinaw. Before it was built, we had to take a car ferry to get to the U.P.

The audience in 'Deal Or No Deal' TV show here sure yells BOO-yeah when prompted...and not BOO-Ya. Sheep can be taught to copy the wrong thing, right? happy Surely, you DO have a different meaning for "gang banger" than OZ's, don't you??? We want ours in prison for a LONG time.

Back to 'Jeff's Approach' for a sec...an approach deliberately never aimed to meet the standards being sought in other topics here by standards setters of any persuasion. happy happy Sometimes, offline ie realtime, I get a sense of being given the runaround when I'm given conflicting, pass-the-buck advice. The task at hand may be minor but escalates to a higher principle of 'truth'.

Well, blow me down if my local councillor didn't briefly reply to one of my page-length emails with an "I agree." without indicating there were some options in the email that contradict...partic if he was agreeing with both. But it's still useable 'evidence'.

Public safety was the minor issue and whether shopping centres and local government are fair dinkum about it, the higher truth. Would I even explore such advocacy if it wasn't for you kind folks here letting me in on a world of 'more important issues' far beyond the needs and reach of the mentally ill. happy

And of course the higher truth of illinois, Michigan, not to mention Texas and other related states of being, are fully exempted from my commentes above. happy

'Deal Or No Deal'
.
I've never seen it. The first time I heard 'boo-ya' was on a TV series about military and weapons called "Mail Call". The gunny sargeant yelled it all the time after a big explosion or a direct target hit. It's supposed to be an expression of satisfaction or accomplishment. Seems everything military has become a catch phrase here nowadays. Supposedly, the phrase originated in the 90s on an ABC sitcom "Hanging with Mr. Cooper" - which I never watched either.
.

.
Here, banger isn't slanguage for sausage, and gang banger isn't necessarily linked to group sex/rape. It's a familiar label for the youth culture of crime and violence (i.e. a gang member who, with little compunction, shoots people). Yes, I'd like to see them disappear from the streets too.
