» redback - objective truths

In response to objective truths posted by Migisi:

Your internal and external search engines are...legendary. happy Another fascinating site!

I have read all the Michael & Kathleen Gear's First North American series. All of Jean Auel novels of prehistoric European peoples. These apparently popular & credible American authors use fiction around fact to bring ancient peoples to life but all rely on university-based skills in anthropology, history etc.

So, a tragically orphaned wild foal is taken in by an outcast Ayla as a surrogate 'mother'...and out of necessity and loneliness etc, comes experimental rides and ultimately a...work horse. There are journeys and adversities through terrible conditions to new lands...a veritable heaven on Earth awaits for those brave enough to traverse if only they dare...the glacier or the endless ocean.

Adam was probably not told the Earth was NOT flat given the extended life of that theory? Noah re-populated the Earth with...neanderthal peoples?

There seems a whole raft of speculations one can make.

» redback - respite care

In response to respite care posted by Migisi:

The superficially simplistic question: Do you believe in Jesus? is a loaded, dogmatic one. If, for example, Jesus was "God in the flesh" for only a eye-blink in eternity a few thousand years ago, didn't God simultaneously exist elsewhere...for Jesus to talk to? Biblical language loses me at times.

I get the point the Bible intends for us to know of a personal God based on experiences others apparently had some 2000+ years ago that should resonate still. The personal God who did not exist for the preceding eternity??

"Depends on whom you ask, and what their personal beliefs are."

I'm with Boanerges on this one. What I believe about this truly matters diddly squat unless it's in sync with fact. Jesus (if He existed) was well within the capabilities of God, seems to me.
But condensing all this (and God) down to a series of ancient Biblical or Koranic verses be they starting from verse 23:7 or from 15:8 or from whatever verse takes one's fancy, doesn't do it for me.

It's why I seek the higher message within the Bible. If it's highest is dogma, I'm lost. If it's highest was the historical recording of 2 pestilent rats saved while all their buddies drowned, tis an unusual even pointless recording of the minutiea of history. But if 10 Commandments can be condensed to 2, what else is the Bible saying.

My life may well be limited by what I'll never know and unrealised ambitions but I no longer hold an unrealistic expectations of being a brain surgeon. ABC happy

Agree. It doesn't appear to me that God told Adam and Eve very much about anything, hence their hunger for knowledge - even from a 'forbidden' source. Guess the forbidden source didn't know if the the earth was a globe or disk either.

Genesis 6 says that the Nephilim (alien giants) were on the earth "also afterward" - i.e. after the Deluge. Jewish legend has it that at least one Nephilim survived as a stow away on the ark - atop the roof. The Bible says "They [the offspring of the 'sons of God' and Nephilim] were the heroes of old, men of renown." Guess we could call Noah and his line 'Noaphilim'?

It's funny "...I just feel like...you know what I'm sayin'...?" but I kinda think they won't understand me either. I have this image of neanderthals roaming the Earth...with bellybuttons. And bumping into Noahphiles with an acquired aversion to water. This mixing of cultures was further refined over the years to the stage we now have the Great Unwashed...the Dags et al.

» redback - control orders

In response to objective truths posted by redback:

The infamous confessed (under duress?) traitor, David Hicks, is due for release today subject to a 'control order' which apparently lasts 12 months. He's only the 2nd OZ citizen to get such an order, the other being Jihad Jack Thomas:

"...The legislation requires that each and every one of the obligations, prohibitions and restrictions to be imposed on a person by an order must be reasonably necessary, and reasonably appropriate and adapted, for the purpose of protecting the public from a terrorist act."

One condition is a midnight to 6am curfew. Now, we all know most good criminals are tucked up in bed by then, certainly those out and about are only seeking a late night latte. Time was, we could exchange prisoners for other countries' prisoners or deport them to their favoured country...but what of citizens?

He'll apply for unemployment benefits from a system he was ideologically opposed to. And we're all reminded to give him a fair go seeing that's what we're famous for.

A heads up for future behaviour? There's rumours he's had the militant Islamic mood "bashed" out of him through whatever legal means were available. But certainly, nothing good mental health-wise can come out of extended solitary confinement.

""Mr Hicks spent five and a half years in detention, two without legal representation and two and a half before he was even charged, until a political solution had to be found for his situation."
http://www.lawcouncil.asn.au/read/2007/2...

in a flawed US military commission process endorsed by the outgoing Prime Minister.

"dirty hands doctrine
Definition
Legal principle that a participant in a wrongful act may not recover damages resulting from it (may not sue the other participants in the wrongful act). Also called unclean hands doctrine. See also in pari delicto doctrine."

Spot the moral and ethical dilemnas.

Hicks also has a one-year media gag rule on him as a condition of his release. So, I guess we can't expect to see a Hollywood movie about him until 2009, ay? (After Bush is out of office.) Maybe Russell Crowe will play Hicks?

In response to control orders posted by Migisi:

It's interesting. The gag order was part of his conditional release from the US prison and is not part of the control order on his later release from the Adelaide prison. (A part of the evidence against him was meeting Osama 20 times...at a time OBL was doing allegedly doing business with GWB senior)

But he reckons he's going to honour the gag order anyway...it expires in March 2008. This happening at a time hopeful publishers are saying they can circumvent our Proceeds of Crime laws which over-ride gag orders.

Hicks' dad has already told the media his son need not apologise for anything as he's simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time...and his son has already told us he needs medical treatment after his stint over there.

What's the gag? happy

Addendum in case of confusion over the term "over there". Hicks publicly claims to a probably sympathetic audience on one point. That Hicks was unfairly treated by the USA to the extent he has to get needed medical treatment here.

» redback - any ideas???

I'm hosting a family reunion in June. I'm paying (or underwriting) the entire cost. Once every 20 years I say "hang the expense!"

Dinner in the famous Rooty Hill RSL Resort's restaurant for 14...with some staying overnight. My sister adopted out as a toddler was re-united with us 20 years ago come June plus defragmenting of other family members into as much of a family unit as we're likely to achieve. Much bad stuff in history for us all to expect better, maudlin memory OK within reason BUT a focus on a fun time culminating in a birtday breakfast the next day.

I'm looking for ideas to make it more fun, like a Xmas in June Kris Kringle theme. I'm working on an ode to the clan. I know June 14 commemorates the creation of 'Old Glory' so I'll explore Aussie stuff.

Any ideas to make it more memorable? Much thanks in advance! happy happy
