It has been said that the family is the basic building block of society.
.
I don't subscribe to that idea. It was first put to me when I was about nine years old. I remember the instance quite clearly. I questioned it then as I do now.
.
I subscribe to the idea that the individual is the basic building block of society.

Once the individual is able to see their self as the basic building block of society, they can take responsibility for their actions in helping to make society a better place for everyone.
.
The family's basic duty is to imbue the individual with a sense of responsibility for its own actions. And, to give the child support and directed guidance during the growth period. Society also has responsibilities for the individual.

I like to think we're truly 'unique', not so much 'alone'.

Family Values? Isn't that what they brag about?
.
So I've heard. But, what does 'family values' mean?
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_valu...
(quote) "Family values is a political and social concept or term that has been used in various nations across the world to describe a set of varied and often ambiguous moral beliefs in society specifically in response to the perception by social or religious conservatives of declining morality within that nation itself.[1] The term is vague in its precise definition as many different groups have claimed that it means different things. As such, "family values" has been described as a political buzzword, power word, or code word predominantly used by right-wing or conservative political parties and media providers."
.
Maybe we could use this article as a basis for discussion? It's about family values as political and social concepts. Or are you more interested in ~individual~ family values?

I'm interested in other's views on the existence and meaning of family values.
.
I know that so-called conservatives make a lot of noise about being value oriented; but, I don't see any of them naming their values other than a belief that the Bible is the Revealed Word of God. In THAT sense, the Bible gets to be their number one value in life. THAT tells you what we're up against in our day to day reality.

Did you--or anyone else--happen to catch the panel discussion of Evolution and Creation this morning on C-Span Book Review?
