My point was that I only meant that the habit of comparing notes is seen by outsiders as a series of tests designed to see who is in and who is out.

Paul says something similar in Romans 14:12-13 (NIV):

12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

13Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way.

If what you're saying is what Paul is saying, then I'm with you.

After pointing out how some "evangelical Christians" go to extremes, he writes, Does this mean that evangelical Christians should jettison the concept of sin and renounce the existence of Satan? Must we turn away from our beliefs because some in our number abuse them?

My answer is, "No, but".
.
It seems more important to me that Evangelical Christians should get a better handle on sin rather than continuing to use their self righteous definitions of specific behaviors. They appear to look at sin as being the breaking of a pre-defined set of rules that can change over time: smoking, sex, drinking, dancing, vulgarity, any of the vices, and almost a litany of behaviors can be the items around which sin is defined. Apparently, the grand daddy of all sin is disobedience or rejection of some basic point of dogma which is some unchangeable point of their "law" if that's what they want to call it or not. They never see their judging behavior as the most obvious of all "sins" or the one on which Jesus based much of his Gospel.

Makes me wonder why God chose the 'wicked unbelieving Israelites' as his people in the first place. Surely he knew beforehand what they'd do. He should've been angry at himself for making that mistake, not them.

but Mig.... we have discussed this many times, and actually, you have the story all turned around.. maybe it would be better to review the story first before condemning God......

The Israelites choose God's laws by accepting them.....
Those laws were not given to any other people...

after nearly 500 yrs of rejecting those laws, God lifted his protection and in came the Babylonians...

Its only a guess on my part.. but.. do you feel that any other people would have done exactly as God instructed them? My best guess is no.. that all would have fallen.. So, the answers do not relate to a people, as much as it does, the peoples hearts and minds...

Eze:20:14: But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, in whose sight I brought them out.
Eze:20:22: Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.
Eze:20:44: And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have wrought with you for my name's sake, not according to your wicked ways, nor according to your corrupt doings, O ye house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

I get the sense that God indeed did blame himself and regret that he'd made humans...

Gen 6:6 - "The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. 7 So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth-men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air-for I am grieved that I have made them."

What did he do instead? He saved a handful of humans to re-populate the earth, and they too begat disobedient and wicked progeny. Didn't he know this would happen? He should've stuck with his original plan for a do-over, IMO. Perhaps this planet would've been a better place today.

Did he ever blame himself for creating his angels - given Lucifer and the other fallen celestials who tempted and tormented his humans to disobey? Did he ever think about destroying and recreating them?
