Embattled Attorney General Resigns
Filed Under Politics, U.S. News, White House, Attorney General, Washington, Alberto Gonzales

WACO, Tex., Aug. 27 - Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.
Mr. Gonzales, who had rebuffed calls for his resignation, submitted his to President Bush by telephone on Friday, the official said. His decision was not immediately announced, the official added, until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here.
Mr. Bush has not yet chosen a replacement but will not leave the position open long, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the resignation had not yet been made public.
Mr. Bush had repeatedly stood by Mr. Gonzales, an old friend and colleague from Texas, even as Mr. Gonzales faced increasing scrutiny for his leadership of the Justice Department, over issues including his role in the dismissals of nine United States attorneys late last year and whether he testified truthfully about the National Security Agency's surveillance programs.
Earlier this month, at a news conference, Mr. Bush dismissed accusations that Mr. Gonzales had stonewalled or misled a congressional inquiry. "We're watching a political exercise," Mr. Bush said. "I mean, this is a man who has testified, he's sent thousands of papers up there. There's no proof of wrong."
Mr. Gonzales's resignation is the latest in a series of high-level departures that has reshaped the end of Mr. Bush's second term. Karl Rove, another of Mr. Bush's close circle of aides from Texas, stepped down two weeks ago.
The official who disclosed the resignation today said that the decision was Mr. Gonzales's and that the president accepted it grudgingly. At the same time, the official acknowledged that the turmoil over Mr. Gonzales had made his continuing as attorney general difficult.
"The unfair treatment that he's been on the receiving end of has been a distraction for the department," the official said.
As recently as Sunday afternoon, Mr. Gonzales was denying through his press spokesman, Brian Roehrkasse, that he intended to leave.
Mr. Roehrkasse said Sunday afternoon that he had telephoned Mr. Gonzales about the reports circulating in Washington that a resignation was imminent, "and he said it wasn't true, so I don't know what more I can say."
White House spokesmen also insisted on Sunday that they did not believe that Mr. Gonzales was planning to resign. Aides to senior members of the Senate Judiciary Committee said over the weekend that they had received no suggestion from the administration that Mr. Gonzales intended to resign.
Senator Charles Schumer, the New York Democrat who sits on the committee and has been calling for Mr. Gonzales's resignation for months, said this morning: "It has been a long and difficult struggle, but at last the attorney general has done the right thing and stepped down. For the previous six months, the Justice Department has been virtually nonfunctional, and desperately needs new leadership."
Senator Schumer said that "Democrats will not obstruct or impede a nominee who we are confident will put the rule of law above political considerations."

» pink101 - Let This President Be

.
Let this president be the last of the Good Ol' Boy network demagogues America will ever see.
.
I cannot imagine another candidate from the South every being elected to the highest office again.
.
The Southron Dixiecrats (Yellow Dog Democrats) took over leadership of the Grand Old Party and have achieved their dastardly goal of dividing America. Now, we must work to bring America back into unity with a progressive leader who will work to rebuild America. Where will we find such a leader? I don't see a single one on the horizon.
.
There is sooooo much work to be done as a result of the long cold winter that has been blowing in from the South for so long. Johnson, Clinton, and Bush. Yukk!
.
Whenever some demigogue from the South brings in his good ol' boys to fill our nation's most important department head roles, you know you are in trouble.

Just another rat...."
.
I don't know about that.
.
In the highly politicized environment in which we exist as Americans, it is very difficult to discern the truth of what is taking place. Code is rampant when ideologies are involved and the cunning thing about that is that you cannot make an accusation that sticks. Trickery is the currency of political jerrymandering.
.
It looks to me as though General Gonzales --as such a seemingly honorable and clean cut guy--was put in the main window of the administration for the purpose of giving the appearance of honesty and straight forward cleanliness. Instead, that back-fired and he has be dragged through the mud of politics. But, who created the mud and who did the dragging? That seems to be the question. When U.S. Attorneys are replaced as a result of their failure to line up with the edicts coming down from such a political boss as Carl Rove, it is time for Americans to get serious about the corrupting influence of some Good Ol' Boy network that has slithered its way into the highest seats of power in the world.
.
That's what I think anyway.
.
We need to make ourselves aware of the goings on in the back rooms of political trickstering.

My thinking...
.
If Gonzo was all that honest and clean, he'd have resigned long before now (as many others have) - at the first hint that he was being used. I don't think he was just window dressing, but a key player on the Rove/Cheney/Bush team (in that order). And I think Rove and Gonzo leaving is a sign that investigators are getting too close to the truth and prosecution may result, so it's time to get out of Dodge and let everything go away. You've heard the saying "out of sight, out of mind".

So far it looks as though you and I are the only ones involved in these questions.
.
happy
.
Rereading my post to which you're responding, you will notice that I purposely wrote that Gonzales is "seemingly" and honest and clean person. Don't forget, he IS an attorney. But, being one of eight children and the only one to have attained higher education makes him LOOK good in the peoples' view.
.
When political advantage is gained through the practices of highly skilled operatives like Karl Rove as the personal tool used by the Bush Dynasty we should expect trickeries outside our normal expectations. So, everything is suspect--doubt is the watchword of the day for the true patriot.
.
We ARE learning a lesson regarding the politics that comes out of the South. I don't think we should trust Southern thinking when it comes to understanding what it means to be an American.
