In response to Southern Thinking posted by pink101:

I don't think we should trust Southern thinking when it comes to understanding what it means to be an American.

Ironic that such stereotypes and dismissals come from those who criticize southerners for allegedly doing the same thing.

Right. We cannot allow ourselves to be bludgeoned down into some cesspool or in a morass of self pity.
.
But, we cannot stick our head in the sand of our own comfort either.
.
The idea of values comes to my mind and I see how so many people have connected with the new Republicanism and the "values" claims that have been made by its Neo-Con leaders. And, all the while, the values that have always driven America into the future from the beginning have been progressive (Liberal). This idea of survival of the fittest in a capitalistic mode means to hell with those people that cannot compete with the rich and famous.
.
There's a lot of work to do and we CAN do it. We've done it before and we will do it again; but, it won't happen if we hide from the challenge. The Boomers--I hate to say--have given us George W. Bush. I don't expect they will do much about getting rid of that way of doing things.

Anti-Southern Bigotry?
.
I don't think so. We have tolerated Southern Bigotry for a long time. It has come to us with its religiosity that claims it is somehow righteous and a lot of us have swallowed it hook, line and sinker. But, millions are now able to see through it. The lies are exposed.
.
I think there is an anger in America that is almost at the seething point. It might not be noticeable in some areas because of a blind-sidedness. But, believe, me--it is there.

American anger can be vicious. If you'd like to see some of it, here is an example:

.
"And there it is, sir. We've caught you."
.
Sir! Sir! Sir! Sir!
.
How anyone can connect with George W. Bush is beyond me. They make themselves complicit in his crime.

Bush is hardly the only liar. He's not even the best liar. Remember all the campaign promises the Democratic candidates made before that November election? They were going to end the war, bring the kids home, they weren't going to budget for or fund it, etc. As usual, they all lied just to get elected. Within weeks after their took office, they caved. If Bush and Repubs could manipulate Dems to fund the war, and even ~INCREASE~ troop levels (the 'surge'), it will be a cinch to get Republican candidates 'comfortable' with the war and continue it. Like the Dems, they'll say whatever the public wants to hear just to get in office, and then do whatever is profitable for them once there. I don't trust ANY candidate to keep his promise or do what's right - regardless of party. They all 'follow the money', and war is big business!

So?
.
So what are you going to do about that?
.
I'm sure you have some values regarding politics that you look for in those people who run for political position in your area. How do you put those values into action by withdrawing from the process? (Not that you do, understand.)

You are doing it here.

Keep it up. The more people who see the light, the more people will reflect the light.

Darkness does not recognize light. Something of substance has to reflect it before it can be seen.
.
Retrograde conservativism does not see the light of progressive values. Why? Because retrograde conservativism is darkness.
