There was a program on PBS last night "Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain". If you get a chance, watch it. It's supposed to air again on PBS Channel 11 on Friday 8/24 at 2am (if you're an insomniac, tune in - ).

You can watch the video on demand on your computer at the C-Span site if it has been put up. It usually takes a couple of days for that to occur.

That was an exciting time when the Muslims were in control of that part of the world. Jews and Christians lived peacefully and side by side with Muslims.
.
Then, the Edict of Expulsion came along in 1492 and all Hell broke loose.

But, it wasn't just the Jews that were expelled--so were the Muslims. If they didn't leave on time, that had better have converted. Those that converted were known as conversos. Many Jews went to Portugal and eventually into middle Europe. Jewish Secularism came out of the evolution that gradually took place over the ensuing era.
