I liked this one, Wendell:
.
1 : acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin
.
I think it makes the point of what it means to be filled with rights.
.
Americans are free from guilt of breaking the law when they are acting according to the rights with which they are filled.
.
It all depends on the way we look at the idea of what it means to be acting within ones rights--standing on their righteousness.
.
And, of course, where one puts their emphasis.

sorry...but the definition for righteousness cannot be found, as given by you, either in the secular, or the religious definitions.. It is only found in your mind....

.
Sorry, Wendell, "9, 10, yer out."

In response to I Liked This One posted by pink101:the suffix Phil, has no bearing.. the Etymology of the word [ righteousness ] has noting to do with a suffix.....
repeating above message:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Main Entry: righ·teous
Function: adjective
Etymology: alteration of earlier rightuous, alteration of Middle English rightwise, rightwos, from Old English rihtwimacrs, from riht, noun, right + wimacrs wise
1 : acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin
2 a : morally right or justifiable (a righteous decision) b : arising from an outraged sense of justice or morality (righteous indignation)
3 slang : GENUINE, EXCELLENT
synonym see MORAL
- righ·teous·ly adverb
- righ·teous·ness noun

Righteousness deals - not with rights - which is a civil/government issue, but with MORAL(s).. It about Ethics and Morality.. not law and government....

» pink101 - Further More
In response to sorry Phil posted by pink101:
.
Self-Righteousness=a state of being full of rights one gives oneself.
.
And, further more, acting like it.
.
So, the idea of righteousness gets to be confused as to if a person acts like they are filled with rights or if they are, in fact, filled with rights.
.
Perhaps the word, righteously, gives us some insight into how a person behaves.
.
So we can consider:
1. Right - an authority as in something one possesses
2. Righteous - to be filled with rights
3. Righteousness - to be in a state in which one is filled with rights
4. Righteously - to behave as though one is filled with rights
5. Rightful - same as righteous
These words can be used as stand alone nouns or as adjectives.
.
Example, "He was rightful of him to make his claim." "It was his righteousness that allowed him to win his case." "He, righteously, claimed he owned the property."
.
Another word of interest is the derivation, upright. We can speak of being uprighteous which gives the impression that one is standing erect on their possessions. A right being a possession of property. Free Speech is a property on possesses.
.
Any of us can go on and fleshing out the ideas surrounding what it means to have a right, a set of rights, or to behave in a way that earns one any rights.
.
The example given by most main line Christians appears to say that one earns the title as a righteous person according to their behavior. Actually, that seems to be the antithesis to the idea of what it means to be righteous.
.
God's Righteousness appears to be that with which one is endowed in their natural state--the inalienable rights.
.
