I'm sorry if you misread what I wrote.
I did not misread.. Even the link you provided states the very same thing that I have stated:
...quoting the article...
"It was by this inward sacrifice of obedience unto death, by this perfect love with which He laid down his life for His friends, that Christ paid the debt to justice, and taught us by His example, and drew all things to Himself; it was by this that He wrought our Atonement and Reconciliation with God, "making peace through the blood of His Cross"."

- Atonement
The historic Jewish and Christian understanding of "atonement" (the word goes back to the mosaic law) is a means of achieving reconciliation with God. Not in some kind of metaphysical or literal "oneness" with God, since humanity NEVER had that. But rather in a harmonious sense - a fellowship sense.
If interested, here's something on the subject from an online evangelical Bible dictionary...

...when two beings/persons are in a state of being at one, that they can and often do deliver a spirit--that re-presents their relationship to the outside world--so that it can be experienced by others. My wife an I are often at one with each other and when we are, there is a spirit that others can sense.
okie.. I would agree with that simple explanation...
