» Brother_Jones - Too many manuscripts

In response to Too many manuscripts posted by Migisi:

At best all these claims about the sheer number of manuscripts and their faithful reproduction can do is to show that the New Testament as we have it today is what the original authors wrote. It does not follow from this that what they had written is true.

This is a great starting place for most readers who are confused about the number of translations. I agree with your writer that the number of manuscripts which do agree does seem to indicate a valid argument for capturing the original authors' writings. The writings will always be under fire, but I'm not sure how anyone can argue that the Jews believed not their stories and wrote tales of known legends.

In response to Too many manuscripts posted by Brother_Jones:
.
When the leading Christian leaders of almost every denomination claim that the Bible--as we have it--carries God's imprimatur, no believer is allowed to question the authority of the Bible.
.
So, no matter what evidence can ever be uncovered about the origins of the Bible, all questions are completely settled for all time.
.
Period.

The Church does not allow disobedience.

I think your statement just reveals your own lack of exposure to the body of Christ. There is questioning in most churches at every level, and most of the time it does not seem to affect the practice of fellowship.

So, no matter what evidence can ever be uncovered about the origins of the Bible, all questions are completely settled for all time.

That is why they make churches for people like you, Pinky. There are dozens of denominations (similar to Christian Unitarianism) that agree with your perspective and claim some sort of Christianity. You are free to join the ones that testify to the idea that the bible is not a reliable source of information about God. Then proceed to their classes which usually teach the same about Jesus.

My attempt at Catholic humor went right over your head, Brother Jones.
.
I did capitalize "Church" and I did mention "Sister".
.
Apparently you don't have too many Catholic friends who told you any stories about what happens to Sister's students when they get out of line.
.
But, I also modified my statement by writing "leading Christian leaders of almost every denomination". And, you will note that this line "no believer is allowed to question the authority of the Bible." was part of the same sentence.
.
I think my claim is true for all intent and purposes.
.
And the following paragraph from your post seems to prove my point:
.
"That is why they make churches for people like you, Pinky. There are dozens of denominations (similar to Christian Unitarianism) that agree with your perspective and claim some sort of Christianity. I'm happy I've given you some ideas for articles. I look forward to reading them. And I'll read your linked articles too. Thanks.

And they did indeed crackle knuckles - with the metal edge of a ruler. If anyone questioned the priest during religion classes, that student would be pegged a smart aleck or trouble maker and he'd wind up sitting in the hallway for the rest of the class (and worse punishment by Sister later). In my parochial school, back in the day, that's what happened. Interestingly, the questions asked by the smart alecks were good ones, and got me to thinking and questioning too. Maybe that's why the priest got upset. He didn't want too many kids thinking for themselves.

I don't associate modern day Catholicism with Christianity. Perhaps there are pockets of true believers in some of their churches.

But, I also modified my statement by writing "leading Christian leaders of almost every denomination". And, you will note that this line "no believer is allowed to question the authority of the Bible." was part of the same sentence.

You appear to be devoid of any examples other than what Migisi provides. Obviously, you can find some Christians somewhere that are mean and selfish. But not every church meeting is for the purpose of instruction or answering questions. The worship service is usually for the purpose of affiming your faith and not for testimonies of doubt. There is really never any good reason for anybody to attend a church with the idea of disrupting and showing disrespect for the proceedings.

When I compare your response to Migisi's, why do I get the distinct impression that you would have made an excellent priest in the Catholic Church?
.
Stop while you're ahead, Brother Jones. It's time for you to go over to the Bible thread and make some comments about the last verses you cited.

Other than that? Don't take yourself too seriously. Remember what Jeff had to say about spastic eyeballs and going gah gah? It's especially worthwhile to laugh at our own self.
.
I have also heard that laughing is super good for our health--especially when we are on a diet. BTW, I'm not on a diet; but, I've lost a little over 9 pounds since the middle of this past May when I started working out at the health club. Trouble with exercise is that it is addicting. Once the body gets used to it? It craves it and more.
.
Which ain't all bad now, is it?

Jeff has a lot of good insights. It is important that we stay balanced and not too sure that we have seen everything that life has to offer.

.
I suppose you are correct in your point of view here.
.
Even so, the point I was trying to make was that we must be able to laugh at our self. So many of us take ourself just a mite too seriously and that is very noticeable here.
.
When someone leaves our company for some reason that others don't take them in a serious enough manner, they seem to be the one with the problem.
.
Are you able to laugh at your own humanity? Or do you have to be in a serious mode at all times?
.
Food for thought.
