The early church did not pick the cross, Migisi, because it depicts "shame." . According to the Jews and Romans, crucifixion on a cross ~did~ depict "shame", it being the most shameful and dishonorable form of execution. . Hebrews 12:2 - "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." . So, you are saying that crucifixion and resurrection are two building blocks of Christianity? . Okay: . 1. Bible/Revealed Word of God . 2. Shame and Guilt . 3. Condemnation . 4. God's Rightousness for Humanity . 5. Crucifixion of Jesus . 6. Resurrection of Jesus . 7. Diety of Jesus . Can we talk about those seven building blocks of Christianity as being requirements of the belief? Are there more we should include? . -- posted by pink101 » Migisi - The Building Blocks In response to The Building Blocks posted by pink101:

I think it needs to be said that Jesus was more or less asked this same question. He was asked what was the greatest commandment - i.e., the building block of Judaism, indeed of monotheism in general. His response is well known. Greatest commandment - Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. Second greatest commandment - Love your neighbor as yourself According to Jesus, all the laws and prophets hang on those two commandments. I would say that these two commandments - Love God and Love Your Neighbor - should be the "building blocks" of our outlook on life and our view of God. As for Christianity specifically, I think the key is God's love to us. Paul writes in Romans 5:8 that God "commended His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus tells Nicodemus that "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son..." (John 3:16). I therefore would hold that the "building block" of Christianity is God's love toward us! If you are seeing a pattern here, it's because you are. The building block of our whole existence and our whole relationship with God (both before and after Christ) is.... actually.. most of those you posted were after Christianity had begun.. The remaining others would be easy to show how they used the OT as their guide to put into practice their religion. Christianity does not borrow from other religions.. Actually, its the other way around!.... -- posted by _Boanerges_ » pink101 - The Building Blocks In response to The Building Blocks posted by Migisi:

Crucifixion of Jesus . 6. Resurrection of Jesus . 7. Deity of Jesus . 8. The Great Commandment given by Jesus . 9. God's Love for humanity . Great! We are starting to get an idea of the structure of Christianity. It seems to me that we must establish these building blocks befofe we can get a comprehensive view of Christianity in our sight. What about Wendell's idea of our right to eat? Is that a building block of Christianity? . -- posted by pink101

Because I don't agree with this list. But I'll wait before shooting down some of them, if we're just in brainstorming mode.
