Absolution

.
".... when, being raised from the dead, He breathed upon His disciples saying, 'Receive ye the Holy Ghost. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.' By which action so signal, and words so clear the consent of all the Fathers has ever understood that the power of forgiving and retaining sins was communicated to the Apostles, and to their lawful successors for the reconciling of the faithful who have fallen after baptism" (Sess. XIV, i)."
.
It's an interesting (but long) article.

Don't scriptures instruct you to forgive sins?

If I could, I would be running through the streets of Austin doing just that. So there must be some discernment of the scriptures you post. John 20:23 probably deserves its own thread. The Apostles were given certain abilities and endowments not given to the likes of me.

Of course we are taught to forgive others. I have already agreed to that in my last post, even to the point of loving and forgiving our enemies. But it is God who atones for sin and removes it from a persons life. All that I can do is try to love the person and let them know that I am not going to seek revenge for their wrong doing against me. Is there some reason that you are not answering any questions about your own beliefs about your One, but you hammer others about theirs? Can you comment on that?

i am the Lord's oldtimer.

Why them, and not you? Is it because you never walked and talked with Jesus in-the-flesh? Well, neither did Paul. Just the apostles were given gifts? Don't scriptures say that Jesus sent out 72 other disciples and they did wonders?

This topic, Protestantism, is about Christianity. And this thread's about Jesus and sinners.

Who am I hammering, Jones? I'm simply asking questions about Christianity, scriptures, and accepted beliefs regarding both.

In response to Did Jesus Come to Forgive Sins? posted by Migisi:

Migisi, I was responding to your example of Catholic priests extending forgiveness to strangers for offenses committed against other strangers.

OF COURSE...it is within my purview to forgive people who have committed wrongs against me personally. But that's talking about individual, personal forgiveness.

I was addressing forgiveness in the broader context.

Agree. The two scriptures I offered were examples of 'against you/me' personal forgiveness.
.

.
Me too, in the other verses. Or do you think they refer to personal forgiveness too? How do you feel about forgiving those who committed the 9-11 atrocities - not against you personally, but against others? Do you think Jesus requires this of believers? Jesus said in Luke 23:34 - "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Was he referring specifically to the soldiers who crucified him and cast lots for his robe? Or did his prayer ask forgiveness in a broader sense - for everyone involved, or for every sinner?

I don't want to totally enrage my charismatic kinfolk, but it does certainly appear that God endowed the early Apostles with certain gifts that are not available or so very rare that we ae foolish to assume them. (like raising the dead)

Who am I hammering, Jones? I'm simply asking questions about Christianity,

I tried to go back and edit the word 'hammer' to say 'gently prod with astute skill,' but the time lapsed. I lost a big real estate deal this week and maybe you can have some empathy that I had to reconsider the shoes I wanted to buy and also the accessory jewelry. I am working on being more user friendly, but when I lose a big ole bunch of money, it sometimes shows in these posts of mine.

Indeed, there ~are~ Christians who believe they've been endowed with the same gifts that the apostles received. Perhaps they have the faith the size of a mustard seed Jesus talked about?

Heh heh. That's much nicer. But I didn't take any offense at your 'hammer'. happy

I certainly ~can~ empathize. My husband's in real estate. The market REALLY ~stinks~ here. I've had to reconsider which bills we'll pay this month, and what meds we can afford. So - if you think you need my forgiveness for something (what, I don't know), then you have it. happy

We all could be working to be more user-friendly - for no other reason than it's good to do.

You say you don't think I was clear.
.
Here is my statement and request from post number 30 in the Think Tank thread:.
.
"I'm not questioning you because of doubt; but, because I want a reference. Where in the Bible does Jesus say he came to forgive all men of their personal sins?"
.
I think that was pretty clear.

I guess much is about perceptions.

"... I lost a big real estate deal this week..." doesn't quite seem to go hand in glove with: "...but when I lose a big ole bunch of money..."

Here I am innocently thinking you didn't win a sale or a purchase you wanted to turn into a profit. Maybe there's deals within deals. You're not losing...just delaying winning???

Mark 2:17 "It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (haven't had a response to this verse to date)

Before I turned the TV channel (I was mindlessly surfing before I mindlessly came here in a further bid to be distracted) I heard a pastor say in some context of gender differences - excepting the fact the man has to be the boss of the house - say: "God does not dominate Jesus"

it occurred to me there really may be an OK bunch of righteous people...and as Jesus was in a pub when he said it, maybe church tis not the optimum place to imbibe in enduring spirituality.

Whether one is truly forgiven and whether one's prayers are truly answered are not questions for this dimension?

If you come home from work and see a fire engine in front of your house, that's bad news.
.
But, when you learn the fire fighters put down a fire in the bud that had threatened to burn your house down, that's good news.
