- Evolution of Literature
For those interested...

It IS a thought-provoking article. Does give some insight into the changing nature of the English language.
Brings to mind why the King James Version of the Bible, for instance, is becoming less popular and less readable in the modern age.

It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
.
Perhaps that is how biblical evolution takes place--in the mind of the beholder?
.
Otherwise, why is there any attempt to get back to the Fundamentals?

- Fundamentals
I think the fundamentalist movement - and I refer to the historic fundamentalist movement that emerged in the second decade of the 20th century w/ publication of "The Fundamentals" (NOT the modern-day caricature) - is a check on the movement that would relegate the Bible to the mere category of literature.
Classic fundamentalists (like John Gresham Machen) argued that the Bible was much more than just literature. It contained truth. I love Machen.

So, are you and I in agreement that Fundamentalism first appeared around 1920?

Regarding Machen, you might enjoy reading this paper:

I like this guy Machen too.

From your link:
(quote)
"When the Church becomes a political lobby, Machen warned, when it advocates political measures whether good or bad, it is turning aside from its proper mission. Machen's concern was for the purity of the Church which, he believed, could only be maintained if the Church refrained from meddling in political affairs. Thus Machen, unlike most of his conservative peers, then and now, opposed Bible reading and prayer in the public schools as well as Christian political action on behalf of Prohibition. Machen's worst fears came to fruition in his student McIntyre for whom the distinction between true Christianity and superpatriotic Americanism was very thin indeed."

Carl McIntyre was a real character in our history. I remember him vividly. As I recall, he made it to the front cover of Life magazine which was the most popular periodical of the day. He, almost single handedly, destroyed Fundamentalism and is, undoubtedly, the reason why Fundamentalist churches changed their names to Evangelical churches. A particular brand of Evangelicalism remains Fundamentalist (capital F).
