Needling is one thing. Thread pollution for the purpose of destroying a chance for discussion is quite another.

An example of what might be the subject of a discussion thread in a subscriber based Think Tank is seen at this link:

Imagine participants reading the content and objectively discussing it.

I guess I never thought of Wendell as being a Troll; but, you make a good point.
.
And, so, when a troll comes a tromping so that a thread is polluted with its droppings, does that mean that we should ignore the thread or the Troll or the droppings?

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Suggestion For Suite101.Com Management

In response to Suggestion For Suite101.Com Management posted by pink101:

In a previous exchange, you said you weren't going to "debate" me on this. And yet, you continue to criticize my judgment in this matter. Do you want to discuss/debate this or are you just venting at me?

For the record, I think profanity or implied profanity is a good line to draw. When someone engages in that, I will make a comment - if I see it in time and it takes place here in the Protestantism discussion boards.

As for needling, "polluting," whatever you want to call it, that becomes very subjective. For my own part, I agree with Migisi. If you feel that Wendell is "polluting" the discussions, why do you encourage him by responding so often to him? Just ignore the posts you feel are inappropriate.

Every message board has a troll or two, and some sock puppets as well. Once they're known, it's easy to "scroll past, real fast" so real discussion can move forward. If we feed them, we're contributing to the death of the thread ourselves.

In response to Suggestion For Suite101.Com Management posted by BrianTubbs:

I'm not sure what your intentions are, Brian; but, neither does it seem that ignoring your comment has any value.
.
It seems apparent you haven't read the exchanges involved in my complaint regarding Wendell's polluting of discussions or you wouldn't have put the quotes around the word, polluting.
.
If we were to hold debates, it would be necessary we have a moderator with the power and ability to maintain certain rules of engagement. We do not debate here. Argue? Maybe.
.
My point has to do with misrepresentation as well as with anything else. Suppose you make a point and someone misrepresents you. Does it make sense you ignore that and let it stand--particularly in the case where no one else calls the misrepresentation?
.
I thoroughly support Wendell's right to be here; but, I disagree that he has a right to wreck havoc on what anyone posts by way of purposefully polluting a thread with bosh and other unrelated comments and accusations. He, quite often, makes good to excellent contributions. But, he, perhaps even more often, attempts to turn inquiry into an argument that he uses to promote some preconception he holds to be absolutely true. I like it when people criticize my ideas with rationale; but, don't like to be the victim of any bully who misrepresents and ridicules.
.
It appears that you support such action by Wendell here; but, that you disagree that I have a right to complain and ask for improvement. Is that correct?

Perhaps.
.
I think what is more important here is that I have brought a focus on your behavior. I am not the one who referred to you as a Troll. If you go back and read the posts you will soon see who that was.
.
Maybe my point is that if we cannot address your behavior, then it will continue whenever you feel the urge to bully some other potential participant. You aren't going to go away.
.
More to the point is that if we cannot discuss behavior of Trolls and Sock Puppets (apparently you qualify as both according to sites like Wikipedia) then we won't recognize one when we see one.
.
It serves your purposes that we do not discuss your behavior.
.
So, why is it you feel so impelled to resort to nastiness?
