» pink101 - Indeed?

In response to a doctrine developed posted by _Boanerges_:
.
Wendell writing in regards to the Bible, "There is no other collection of books that has surpassed the Bible's superiority in all aspects of the human mind and soul... none..."
.
What does the Bible teach us about calculus and rocket science or any number of other issues of interest?

Pink, the end of your question is really open-ended and is just too easy to answer. The Bible is one of the most practical books EVER written - and that's stated objectively. It addresses everything from money to marriage to friendship to attitude and on and on. You've read Proverbs, for instance, I'm sure.

» pink101 - A Difficult Call

In response to Indeed? posted by BrianTubbs:
.
It is a difficult call as we are not accustomed to dealing with the subject in such a way that we get comprehensive answers.
.
On one side, we have the tendency to not want to be embroiled in any unsettling situations. On the other, we have the tendency to want to promote the idea that we are being martyred for some cause. Neither side gains much understanding of itself or of the other in such a case.
.
It is a difficult call to make the case that there is an attitude of oppression coming from one side that wants to impose its reality view on all society and that there is an attitude of not wanting to get involved in any upsetting activities on the other. I think it is reminiscent of the troubles America faced during the Civil Rights Movements in which Martin Luther King, Jr., was such a great leader. During that struggle there was a strong attitude of oppression on the one side and an almost equally strong attitude of not wanting to rock the boat on the other. And, there was an act of extreme violence when Martin Luther King, Jr., had his brains blown out in the attempt by the oppressor to settle the questions.
.
The oppressor uses methods similarly motivated as some of the methods we see being employed here. It is related to the idea of FREEDOM. And, that brings up the questions as to WHOSE FREEDOM it is that is being protected. Is it the FREEDOM of the oppressor to continue in their oppression or is it the FREEDOM of the protester to continue in their protestations about the oppression they are feeling at the hands of the authoritarian oppressors.
.
Here we have a DEMAND being made that "There is no other collection of books that has surpassed the Bible's superiority in all aspects of the human mind and soul... none...". The reason why I'm using the word, DEMAND, is that there is no standard given other than the fact that the DEMAND is made that it is true. I have protested that DEMAND and am being tasked for my protest. So, it seems to me that the parallel can be drawn that it is reminiscent of the Civil Rights Movement in which Martin Luther King, Jr., said, "There comes a time..." when enough is enough and when "...justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream".
.
Martin Luther King, Jr., was, probably, the most outstanding example of Christian expression America has seen in its citizenry.

Is objectivity even possible for the Christian who is totally convinced that this book as the inerrant, literal, wholly (holy) inspired 'word of God'? Your statement is your personal 'belief', which makes it subjective.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Objectivity

In response to Indeed? posted by Migisi:

It is possible for people to strive for objectivity. I'll grant that no one (and I mean NO ONE!) is 100% perfectly objective. However, people can and should strive to be fair and balanced when called for. In this case, I think it's very fair, very balanced, and (yes) very objective to say that the Bible is extremely interesting and practical - and that it applies to many topics and issues.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Follow up on Objectivity

I should also point out that there ARE objective truths and facts. And it IS possible for people, no matter how biased, to identify those facts and truths.

For example...I'm biased in that I love George Washington. And I'm also ACCURATE when I say that GW was the American Commander-in-Chief in the American Revolution, that he ultimately prevailed in that capacity over the British, that he presided over the Constitutional Convention, and went on to become our first President under the new Constitution. My bias does not prevent me from seeing those facts.

Likewise, I love the Bible. And I believe the Bible to be divinely inspired. And I'm accurate in saying that it is one of the most practical, influential, and interesting compilation of books ever produced.

I think almost every mature person agrees with that. You might have added, useful.

I think it's very fair, very balanced, and (yes) very objective to say that the Bible is extremely interesting and practical - and that it applies to many topics and issues.

To ~you~, the Bible is 'extremely interesting and practical'. But clearly not everyone shares your OPINION. If, in FACT, everyone did, then your opinion would be 'objective' ("expressing or dealing with facts or conditions as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices, or interpretations; perceptible by ~all~ observers" - Merriam-Webster).
.
Likewise, I love the Bible. And I believe the Bible to be divinely inspired. And I'm accurate in saying that it is one of the most practical, influential, and interesting compilation of books ever produced.
.
Your "And I believe...divinely inspired" is your subjective ('I love the Bible') spiritual belief, not a demonstrable ~fact~ that everyone accepts. Your claim "I'm accurate in saying" is based on what? ~Some~ people believe the Bible is "one of the most practical, influential, and interesting compilation of books ever produced", but not all. So the declaration "it is" is not accurate.
.
To your credit, you do say the Bible is 'one' of the most "practical, influential, and interesting compilation of books". Wendell declares: "There is no other collection of books that has surpassed the Bible's superiority in all aspects of the human mind and soul... none..." That's simply his subjective opinion. Not fact.
.
So, again I ask, is objectivity regarding the Bible even possible for Christians? My OPINION is 'no'.
