In response to intellect? or... posted by pink101:

.
Not only were the colors of the top exciting to a little boy; but, the top had holes it it that caused a musical sound--sort of a humming.
.
Exciting to a little girl as well. I had a few of those whistling tops. Did you ever have the wind-around string-pull tops? They were challenging.
.
Ever watch a top that's stuck in a crevice or depression in the floor? It spins in place until it runs out of energy. Gotta give it a knudge to get it to move on.

In response to Dostoyevsky on Predilection posted by pink101:

The intellectual quotes of the day!

Phil: "Unless you can stop defining my thinking and allow me to speak on my own behalf. Otherwise, why would I ever carry on a three way conversation with you in which you and your ego out vote me at every turn?"

Phil: "You certainly seem bent on the put down. You are adept at it. it must give you some sense of self satisfaction."

Wendell: "which road will he choose"

Nietzsche
'I have done that,' says my memory. 'I cannot have done that' -- says my pride, and remains adamant. At last -- memory yields.

In response to intellect? or... posted by Migisi:
.
There is a variation of the top we played with when we were deep into adolescence.
.
Thread spools come in different sizes. We used to get the inch and a half empty spools when our mothers were done with them.
.
We cut notches in the edges to fashion them like a sprocket. Then we would wrap about a two foot piece of string around them. Next we would put a thin pencil through them.
.
You get the picture. They were like little barrels that we could put the string so they would spin.
.
That's when the fun began.
.
Remember, we're boys about ten, eleven, and twelve. Not quite ready for girls yet.
.
Just at dusk, we would get our little "noise makers" and go in search of some house where we could see the man of the house reading a newspaper.
.
When we found one, we would sneak up quietly to a window close to the unsuspecting victim. Then, we would carefully place our notched spool on the glass and we would pull hard on the string as we pressed the spool against the glass.
.
It makes a sudden and raucous noise.
.
And, the victim jumps up.
.
Aren't young adolescent boys fun to have around?
.
This is Wendell's dusk time and he is out rattling loose window panes all over his neighborhood.
.
I think he is having fun. What do you think?
.
I have to go to the health club for my exercise.
.
You guys have fun.
.
happy

You're a funny fella! ABC

You got me re-reading my posts to see where/how I used the word 'predilection' that would have caused you to "helpfully" define it for me in case I didn't know. Can't find it but then I wear glasses to restrain my powerful vision. happy
Whenever I've used it, I intend the meaning to include: "is a behavioral predisposition"

BUT you were simply telegraphing your punches so you could use it in a later post. happy

In response to My Purpose posted by pink101:

"I think the definition of intellectual that you provided is pretty good and I'm using it."

But you introduced the concept of an 'non-intellectual' despite my posts. I don't know what you mean by that.

"...So, who's having an argument..."

Pink...please don't be obtuse about 'argument'...it's hard enough already for me to know if I'm being deliberately misunderstood. Let's call it a 'discussion' instead whereby you highlighted to us how you were put down. I'm assuming you disagreed with the put down.

You're a funny fella! ABC

thanx

You got me re-reading my posts to see where/how I used the word 'predilection'

uhm... no.. I used that word. you had nothing to do with it whatsoever....

that would have caused you to "helpfully" define it for me in case I didn't know.

I placed a definition for all... not specifically for you!

Can't find it but then I wear glasses to restrain my powerful vision. happy

maybe you might want to put them on now?

Whenever I've used it, I intend the meaning to include: "is a behavioral predisposition"

thats nice.. but.. my responses were directed towards pink.. not you.. even though you did totally ignore my questions (as an aside).. but, you did make passing glance at the link offered!

BUT you were simply telegraphing your punches so you could use it in a later post. happy

uhmm.. no.. sorry...
